Hi Guys I'm a bit of a lurker but have been flat out at work which is ok as it pays the bills, and of course my guitar playing has suffered the most, so much so that when I was playing for the first time in months on my Fender Resonator my hubby asked if I was playing experimental Jazz (I just laughed and said no I'm just crap LOL) normally its would be the other way round I fear LOLOL

Anyway I've been offered a 1956 Hofner committee archtop to buy but while its in pretty good nick (altho its wooden case (oringinal) is a little worse for wear ) the guitar is fairly amazing and for somthing thats made it to 51 years with still all the orinigal bits I was wondering what you think I should pay for it be honest guys How much would you consider as a top and bottom price

How much would any of you guys go to get one of these remember its a 1956 piece and if I can manage to send the photos on my new whiz bang internet phone, to my home pc I can at least put some pics up

What do you think Guys is a good price
Lou

http://www.provide.n...fh/hofner2.html ...Really cool text site on Hofners

Just a hip shot but under 1500 sounds safe. (Based on e-bay, a couple of vintage sites and the talking skid mark in my underwear.)
Just an idea... Not an actual serving suggestion.

I know that often in Australia vintage guitars are more costly than the same guitar in Europe and the US. I would go no higher than the Australian dollar equivelent of $1500 US. (If being sold in the US I would go no higher than probably $1000 in very nice condition.) (The condition of the case is of relatively little importance, however just having the original case in almost any condition does increase value.) Make sure the guitar is in good playable condition and never assume any major playability issues it might have (like neckset or bow, extremely high action, etc) can be easily corrected. Sometimes they can, but sometimes a fairly old guitar will have the problem too "ingrained" into it to be corrected without a lot of work.

I also like vintage guitars. Although I have quite a few guitars (as old as 1929. The archtop I'm playing in my little avatar-photo to the left is a 1949 Gibson L-50.) I'm not what you'd really call a "collector" because I don't buy them to collect. I buy them because of their quality and "vintage sound" which is rarely found in contemporary guitars. The quality of craftsmanship (and even many of the woods used back then) isn't easy to come by nowadays.

Anyway, good luck!

I don't disagree with the 1000 usd price point but I'm seeing an emerging market for the hofner brand as somewhat of a poormans' investment instrument and though I've little to defend my point. I think that a figure of up to but not over 1500 US for the 468 (AKA committee) is still a fair aqusition value.
...Of course I'd just offer up a hundred and a case of beer to show my good will...
You'd be amazed at what people will let go for just 100$ T.V.'s, Pianos, cars, girlfriends...

John, it very well might be worth the money (in extremely nice condition, etc) and I know the vintage market goes up quickly (and sometimes "whimsically" as new collectibility-favorites emerge). And in Australia most guitars are more expensive than in the US. Myself, I wouldn't pay over $1000. That 1949 Gibson L-50 I mentioned above in my pic (extremely nice condition/non-original case) is now only worth about $1,000, maybe $1,200 at best. I can't see the Hofner going for more than the Gibson. But people pay what they will pay. It might very well be worth it to some.

Oh, and let me know where those $100 girlfriends are all hidden. I've never found one that wasn't a whole lot more expensive than that! laugh.gif
