ive just bought one of these tape sync units. ive never used one before (ive never owned a tape based portastudio) but the idea struck me that i could use one with a digital 4 track recorder (things like the boss micro br 4trackdont have midi ports) instead to sync it with my midi stuff, so i could use it as (a track length) sample of me playing the chords so that i could play licks over the top of it, with my sync'd midi stuff being the drums and bass.

also if i played a gig with this setup, would you say 'yeah it counts as its live', or would you critisize it for being just an overly complicated karioke machine, or both?

^does that make sense?

edit: id want the digital instead of tape, just for the ease of adding compression or just post recorded effects in general. and in my defence for the is it live question, i was thinking of running that through a mini kaoss pad, you know to add a hands on 'life' to it (the midi stuff ive got is analouge so i can twiddle dials for that feeling)

If there is no midi port on the recorder the best you can do is record a time code track on the recorder.
Life is like a musical by Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Very popular and not as bad as some would have you believe. That is, unspeakably awful but mercifully brief.

if you put a midi time code stripe on to a track of a digital multitracker (much like you would with a cassette multitracker), will unspecified midi equipment be able to 'read' it with each subsequent playback?

^bit wordy that init, i reckon i could shame a solicitor on a good day

if you buy a lightsnake cable , it will turn the input to digital b4 it reaches the digital recorder , therefore it MAY work turning the analogue sound into digital - they is twenny quid !
