The banjo was one of the early instruments that made an impact on blues music. Gus Cannon from the North Mississippi area was born in 1883. His first banjo was homemade from an old guitar neck and a breadpan. I recommend you give a listen to an album he cut in Memphis at Stax Records in 1963 - "Walk Right In". The title track has been covered by many great artists including Dylan, Joplin and was a huge hit for the Greenwich Village folk group "The Rooftop Singers" in 1963.
