Can anyone reccomend some more melodic bass lines something that sounds interesting if played on bass alone.

I always thought the beginning of NIB by Black Sabbath sounded cool - it's not really hard, it's just a blues thing.
I also always liked the bass in The Lemon Song by Led Zeppelin - not a solo but definitely sounds really good if you can learn some of those walking blues lines.
My bass player always liked to warm up with with the solo section of Freewill by Rush, but that might be a little tough.
How about The Fish by Chris Squire (Yes - Fragile) - the melody isn't that hard. It might be fun to try and work out some of what he's doing there. Lots of overdubs and weird things going on.
How about "Tink Walks Amok" by Zappa - - might a little tough but would certainly keep someone busy for a while. That song is like a virtual school of bass in 3 and half minutes hehehe

Try some walking bass. I would link you to a MIDI file, but the site won't allow it for some reason...

Go for some classic McCartney walking basslines. "Eight Days A Week", "All My Loving" etc.. Also check out some Joy Division basslines ("Love Will Tear Us Apart", "Ceremony", "Disorder", "She's Lost Control"), and The Smiths always used good melodic basslines.

Here is a small-scale "ditty" that my music buddy and I recorded. I have given it to several bass students to learn as an example of a melodic bass line. It's not famous or anything, but you are welcome to use it if you'd like. The bass carries the whole song!

Motown and disco lines, FTW.
The Jackson 5's "I want you back" features a brilliant snakey line, as most Jackson 5 songs do.

Born Under A Bad Sign is a pretty simple one that would also give you the chance to jam along with.
