i have an alesis 3630 compressor (3630s' manual) that i want to use with my yamaha mg 12/4fx mixer (12/4fx's manual) as a limiter, to give me a more 'for the radio' feel, both on the main stereo l & r (to my speakers) and the phono l & r record outs (im going to run that to a mobile recorder, to enable easy pc audio transfers). i'm sure it has to do with the aux bus but as ive never done it before i dont want to go and buy aload of leads that im not going to need (coz ive just had my arse peeled by my car insurances £300 excess and lost 2 years no claims and not even had a car for three weeks coz of swift internet insurances complete ineptitude and inaction when i was the victim of a hit and run by a bus, pls ignore that wee rant, but do at least think of hire car cover as a must when you renew your policy with who ever).
err where was i? ohw yeah, im not very familar with insert fx (ive only got a korg mini kaoss pad 'insert' running to my mono bass channel) and all that so any advice i would greatly appreciate

edit: ive gone and bought some leads on ebay, so i'll let you know what i find out when they come

tell you what folks ive been left scratching my head over this-

ive bought a lead that has 1 trs that splits off to 2 ts's. ive stuck the trs end into the aux on my mixer and the ts's into channel A & B of the 3630. ive then taken the 3630 outputs and connected them (with plain old mono ts leads) to the L & R returns marked on the mixer. (i thought that sounded reasonable guess at what i should do)

all im getting is a mad clicking sound in one headphone and nowt in the other (sounds like a voltage pulse) but i'd not turned any of the aux dials round on the channels (and tbh i cant be arsed messing now ive got to get up for work at 5). i unplugged the aux and tried it in the effect socket underneath it. that seems to have worked to some degree, but its only in one channel. ive looked in the destruction manual and it says ................. er, well it says quite alot but impedance blanced phone type output jacks are the ones i should be using from the send and mono ts's to the returns. so i think ive got the right lead. im sure the compressor is working coz its ok on my other stuff via it being in a chain and then straight to a stereo channel, and i tested the lead as soon as it came. where might i have gone wrong? or have i even totally misunderstood the send/return conncept?

the pulses and clicks were from me not having the dials set on the channels i want to limit so that prob was an easy fix, but ive still not managed to do this in stereo and i think that i cant. so ive given up trying to do this. nevermind coz i had an idea this morning that even more exciting a use of a compressor (i can side chain my bassdrum with one of my two bass channels, its gonna sound mad coz the other will be unaffected but its not going to take up low end real estate (i'll eq it) while the other two can dance with each other for the 'woof'). i still realise that a globally limited/compressed song will sound more like a proffesionally produced piece but then again so does stuff done on a computer anyway, so i have decided to buy another computer (this one i built myself and is noisey as anything and isnt very stable) and some software to mix and vsts and all kinds of extra expensive crap. damn (but it feels so good. man, im scaring myself i want to go 'muhahaha' like an evil genius)
