Ok so I've got a nice little extra hard drive not being used, now I was gonna install linux on it. Either Ubuntu or Xubuntu (as my comp is old). Whether I install it or run it off a CD i can get the ubuntu loading screen with the bar filling up and then my monitor goes all screwy and i get random colourful distorted crap. Interestingly my other monitor (i have dual monitors) says out of range.

I know with xubuntu there's a graphical safe mode, is there something similar with Ubuntu?

aaaah actually - there is - am i right in thinking i need the live cd of it to run in safe mode?

Yes, you need a Live CD to run it in Safe Mode. The monitor troubles could be from an incompatibility with the graphics chip, is it an integrated graphics card or a dedicated one?

it's a separate card, a ######ty one, but a separate card. However I removed my card and tried it with the onboard one and it did the same. I'll give it a go in safe mode see what i can do. If I can get into that, then I've got linux drivers for my graphics card so should be ok - I hope :S

Most Linux OS's require you to install the drivers for graphics manually. Unlike Windows or Mac OS X, Linux does not come with most graphics drivers built right into the software, nor is there a lot of compatibility with some GPU's because each Linux OS is different from the others. Some generic integrated graphics like an Intel GMA or Nvidia based chipsets may be supported depending on the version of the OS, but usually you have to install the driver yourself.

I just hookup the internet up to it. I think it's cool. I think I am becoming a geek sad.gif It seems to be working fine. I haven't tried playing music on it or a dvd or streaming yet.
