While drunk I've met an old friend and when he mentioned he had bought an original Les Paul and was learning guitar I foolishly offered to give him some lessons. I could probably teach him a little bit but I'm no expert myself and he really likes metal which I rarely play. I remembered a few years back learning duality by slipknot and it not taking long due to the simple tuning and rythem but besides that I can't think what else I'm going to teach him. So any ideas on simple death metal songs? I think I'm gonna just explain how tabs and "5ths" work using duality and then leave him with a few others to try as he is having guitar lessons elsewhere.

EDIT: Now I've had a little think about it maybe thats the wrong approach and I should just perhaps teach him some ramones type power chord songs as there simple but heavyish instead of going into drop tunings and such.

yeah, giving him a sense of how power chords work will help him out if he doesn't already know. showing him how different tunings work though is also a good idea especially if he likes metal, because they do tune differently a lot. Just have fun tho, because that's the point right?

Easiest metal song to give anyone is Enter Sandman by Metallica. But if the guy is a total beginner, you should be starting him off with basic open chords and simple songs and basic tabs and scales.

main riffs to Metallica songs are pretty standard, as are the main riffs to Black Sabbath songs.

Dimmu Borgir is pretty straight forward and easy for beginners.
