Hey, I'm playing bass guitar in my school's jazz band next year, and I need to get a bass. My parents can't get me a really expensive one, but they can get me one that costs up to $300. I was lookin at the Epiphone Les PAul bass, the Epiphone Thunderbird IV bass, and the Squire Jazz bass. What do you guys think?

Ibanez and Yamaha have decent inexpensive basses and the epiphones are pretty good as well. Its all about comfort and playability. My preference is to start with a standard shaped body because the odd shapes like thunderbirds, explorers and "V" can be uncomfortable, especially when sitting down. I started with my brother's Ibanez flying V and I hated it. It was too heavy, too awkward and gave me back problems. Jazz pick up config as apposed to the precision pickup config (fender base reference). Light weight is a must. Go to you music store and sit/ stand with it for a while and you'll know what feels good. Good Luck cool.gif

I think I got a "damaged" fender jazz bass (Made in Mexico, but still...) for about that price at guitar center. by damaged i mead there was a dent on the back and on the headstock haha. Great deal, I think they were also trying to get rid of that model, plus there was a sale going on. BOTTOM LINE: shop high and work your way down if its too expensive, don't immediately settle for a low-end guitar! also it helps to shop during sales and to look for used, damaged, out-dated, or floor models...
good luck

buy a used bass. you'll get way more bass for your money. look for Fender, Ibanez, Warwick, Dean, and Schecter. those are some great brands to start out with and by going for a used bass you can get a $600 bass for $300 sometimes. check craigslist for your area and see what you can find.

Look it took me 6 months from my birthday (july 25) when i was supposed to get my bass and in mid to late december when i found my beaut, the Syncromatic, 350$ but a deal with a 60 dollar case for only around 310$. And the amp was used, (originally couldnt get it to work until the 2nd time i went but we got it anyway) for about 275$ from 350$-375$ also this is a gretsch, and they dont make them anymore (idk why), and it looks like a les paul, so in my honest opinion, Gretsch = 1337ness!

I've bought and returned a thunderbird, monster bass, beautiful, but deadly, after getting duped into buying a 95$ case that would never come and going over out 350$ limit, we returned it (with a dent no less, friggin hard not to bang that thing up.) Plus the neck was really long and i had to fully extend my arm to get to the first fret so, if i were you i'd make that a no go my friend.

I have a couple cheap one that sound really great. check out Yamaha RBX170 and Ibanez GSR200.

I like the action on the GSR200 better but the Yamaha feels like better quality.

they are both around $200
