Okay so my friend says to me something about getting a wire converter jack from big to small in order to plug it into my pc so that i could record.. I cant quite remember the conversation i just thought it would be so cool. So i got the big to small lead, plug it into my guitar and into my computer Sound socket. But when i try and record something from the computer it doesnt work... meh
Does anyone know what i have to buy or what software i need to get in order for me to be able to record straight from my guitar into my computer?
Thanks...
Im really new to this whole guitar software thing :\

You need a MIDI.
No you don't.
Zooloo is spot on. If the line-in socket isn't working, use the mic socket. Also, make sure the recording volume in your volume control isn't muted, (it is by default).
Finally, you will need some semi decent recording software (the built in windows sound recorder is shit). You can download a freeware program called Audacity from here.
Recording is fun. Good luck with it, and welcome to GTU

Uh...what converts the signal?
The soundcard

Life is like a musical by Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Very popular and not as bad as some would have you believe. That is, unspeakably awful but mercifully brief.

Oh silly Jen, you're mistaking recording a guitars output with tracking a guitars output as a music stave/score (where a MIDI converter and hexaphonic pickup/transducer would indeed be required)!
As for the right approach, you should use your line-in instead of your mic input since the latter would create a vast amount of gain clipping the signal. Having said that, you'd ideally want something in between the guitar / amp and inputs of your soundcard/computer too to adjust the levels and round out the sound (such as a mixer or pre amp), but that's me being a soundsnob. A line-in connection from a half decent FX unit will do the job just fine. Happy recording!

A Behringer V-amp or a Line 6 POD is an ideal unit for doing the job. You have over 30 different (very convincing, might I add) virtual amplifiers and cabs, and a decent range of effects (which aren't all that good though) but either will get the job done.

Does the Behringer do the same job as the POD? I was gonna get one cos i cant afford a POD, but my mate said it wouldnt do the job. If i just wanna plug and record my electric, would the behringer be good enough to get decent results? So far ive only been able to record using my acoustic cos it has the pre amp built into the guitar.......

I've had experience with both, and I prefer the V-amp. The amp simulation is pretty much identical on both, but the effects are slightly better on the V-amp in my opinion. Although the effects on both units aren't all that great.
Then there's the cheaper price-tag too.

If you have a listen to my soundclick, all the guitars on it were done using the V-amp. I didn't even bother tweaking it to get the right sound either, so I'm sure I could get better tones out of it if I wanted to.
