So I have a lifetime subscription to McAffee through ISU, but now that I'm no longer a student I can't get on and download the latest versions of it. So what are some really good free ones?

Whats the point of a limetime subscription if they're gonna punk you like that?

I personally use AVG but the latest version, 8.0, is kind of lousy. It detects things as malicious that are in no way malicious. What I would try to do is find a 7is version. Thats a very good AV.

thats a beautiful website. I like to get old versions of stuff. Like AIM you can get a version before they started to feel it necessary to mess with all aspects of your system.

Yep, I still run AIM5.9 with DeadAim smile.gif

Anyway, my computer basically turned itself inside out when I installed AVG 7. It thought that absolutely everything was a virus...INCLUDING AVG! And then it took away my mozilla and IE as well as aim.... wtf?

Aw man, this stuff just wants to keep bringing me down. I decided to say screw it and downloaded the latest mcafee quick before I lose my account later this month (through the university) and I'll worry about something free later, but it deleted my doom3 images and keygen saying they were trojans cwy.gif

Almost all keygens are considered trojans.
I just tell AVG to STFU when it wants to delete a keygen.

I just go into a shop and buy games with money. It's great, you get this virus free dvd, and pass key, a little booklet, and even a case to put the whole thing in, all for only a few £££s. AVG works great with these 'legal' dvd's too! (Even version 8!)

But AVG took out my ######ing internet...and itself...before I had a chance to go anywhere. After about 3 minutes of spam clicking the fuck off button I gave up.

Forget I recommended that . . . . .

But I dont see why it would do that unless something malicious was attached to those exe files, which is likely. Did you try uninstall and reinstall of the browsers and AIM?

AVG is my friend, altough I turn off the link scanner in version 8 since I tend to know what I'm clicking on. Be careful using older versions as I can remember that AVG7 wouldn't connect to the update service after a certain period of time because version 8 had been released and that version would be the only one getting support and updates.

Another pleasant free scanner (seeing how you're having trouble with AVG) is Avast Anti-Virus

How could have there been anything bad attached to AVG? I downloaded it, then turned off my internet before uninstalling anything else. It literally went though every file in the avg folder saying that it was a malicious file and it didn't let me use any of the options like clean, quarantine, or delete--kept getting a popup box saying it wasn't available. All I could do was continue to the next.

Oh really? It did that with AVG files too? Thats very odd, Ive never heard of such a thing. I was thinking it would be a possibility that it could be attached to a browser or AIM .. .. .. but AVG itself.

Hmm.

I never once had that problem. Nice that it removes tracking cookies though. When I upgraded to the latest version of AVG I had absolutely zero problems at all, maybe your computer really was just screwed up Jen. Although keep in mind when I updated it to AVG Free 8.0 or whatever it is now, I had recently done a complete system restore and had a clean slate on my hard drive.

And yes, a lot of keygen programs do have viruses attached to them.

I have a similar question... I can't seem to uninstall AVG 8. It gives me this:

Something bad happened in the application. Error diagnostic files saved to 'C:/DOCUME~1/Josh/LOCALS~1/Temp/avg8inst.err'

Any ideas? I've shutdown and powered up many times since I first tried it. And the .err file is nothing. The web service says unknown.
