That's a very good question but unfortunatly there is no definite answer... sad.gif

Well at least let me try one: Overdrive is the sound you get when you put more gain into the amp that it can handles hence producing a crunchy sound. It is generally accepted that an overdrive pedal has a bit less crunch or "bite" if you will than a distortion pedal.

Distortion is more a break down of the sound. Think of it as a blown speaker that you still trying to make work. It is the sound you'll get from band such as Metallica or Slayer to give you an idea.

Having said that, i must point out that either distortion or overdrive pedal tend to be real tone sucker for bass. Some manufecturer make some pedal specifically for bass. If it's possible lean toward one of those and it may help you keep your bassy tone.

I have used a Ibanez PD7 Phat-Hed pedal for a while and was happy with the sound i had with it. Here is a review from Harmony Central.

I don't personally care for effects pedals, but I know several players who absolutely SWEAR by this pedal: the Tech 21 VT Bass Pedal....check it out:

Strictly as a follow up to the information on the Tech 21 VT pedal:

I live near the MF/GC clearance center and was out there just goofing off a while back. They had these pedals (Blem) for $120. I figured "what the hell" and grabbed one. It was in perfect shape, with the exception of the box it came in - a little bent up - no big deal.

Took it home and WHAMMMMMOOOO!!! This is THE pedal that I have waited for (and didn't think existed) for years! Great tube sound and distortion and absolutely no loss of low end. I use it constantly now.....

I HIGHLY recommed it!

my little micro GK amp sounds better. however if you looking for distortion maybe this pedal will be the thing. seems a little noisy to me. then again I like big fat clean bass rich in sound.
