Hi, I've found a mexican P-bass at my local pawnshop, its only 230 bucks and I think I'm buying it today. Any thoughts? I just wanted to start getting into bass. Is it fairly comprable to the mim guitars fender has, I was thinking that it would be a good place to start. Also there is a jazz bass there for 240, so I'm not sure which one to pick up.
Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Yeah MIM instruments is not that bad. And for the price you are talking about sound like a good deal.
Now which one should you pick? Well it depends of what kind of sound you're after. P bass has a more growly sound with more deep end. J bass is on the other end of the spectrum (well sort of) and has a more punchy-trebly sound.
Now keep in mind that the J bass having 2 pick ups may be a little more versatile than the P with is one PU but in the right hands, a P bass can be as versatile as any other bass.

Good choice. I also prefer the P bass over the J.
And remember for bass amplification the more the better.
