Hi everyone, I'm new to this site, etc. etc. introduction and all that.

I have a question for this (at least seemingly haha) knowledgeable group:

I'm been playing guitar for about 5 years and have not grown bored with it; but I want to try new things.
I'm thinking about getting a new instrument, probably stringed.

Any suggestions? Price range: 300-450 or so.

I was thinking bout a 12-string, but I'm afraid that the similarity to my 6-string would lead me to not want to spend this amount of money on something I at least sort-of already possess.

Hi, and welcome.

12 string guitars are wonderful instruments but they can be a hassle to tune sometimes. Mandolins and bass are fun to play.

Keep in mind a 12-string can be used in very different ways than a 6-string. (But, as Dorio said, they can be a bear to keep in tune sometimes.) If you want an actual different stringed-instrument probably a mandolin or a banjo. (A 5-string banjo. A 4-string is extremely limited in its use and a 6-string is basically the same as just playing a guitar that looks and sounds like a banjo.)

And welcome to GTU.

I went w/ BASS and BANJO as my "other" instruments.
I learned classical piano when I was a kid.
