I have been trying to play Joe Satriani Mystic Potatohead groove and this part of the song my fingers are barely long enough and barely have the strength to play it. I have played this passage for about 2 weeks now and I am still along way from performing it correctly enough to be recognized as being part of this song. : ( I was wondering how many have tried it? And any success ?
Here is Joe doing it. it starts in the video at 25 sec

It's not something I've ever played or tried to play but I have a tip that might help you speed-wise. That he reaches over and holds the guitar neck with his right hand I believe is mainly for "flash appeal" when performing. (Looks more "oh-wow-cool" on stage) (Nothing wrong with adding "flash.") I doubt it's all that necessary, but especially when learning. Try learning and practicing it without the right-hand movement first until you get it down, and then if you think it's necessary add it on. On the video he seemed to think it removed a lot of the "mud" overtones, and maybe it did, but I'd try to learn it first without that right-hand movement's distraction. Or approach it differently altogether... use the right hand to tap and the left hand to mute.
Un-plugged is not the same as
never-was-plugged-in-to-begin-with.

At this point I am playing it like a arpeggio. I can play it forwards but I am having the most difficult time playing it backwards. I doubt I will play the right hand over the left I am not that type flashy person and it looks fake in my eyes.
