For medical reasons (!) I want to trade in my old Yamaha FG335 dreadnought for something smaller and maybe nicer, (300 - 400 quid?).

Has anyone any recommendations for shops in and around London Herts/Essex borders or Croydon? Have you had great service? I work fairly close to Denmark street... are those shops a rip-off or competitive? Most of all I want a shop that can give me great advice as far as getting max volume and sweetest tone out of a smaller guitar. I think I won't get this from ebay which may be where to go for a bargain - or is that too much of a gamble?

I know I should just be making my own mind up with my own ears but I'm sure we've all been pursuaded by shop staff and impulse bought then regretted it!

Thanks all!

Denmark Street's the one off Tottenham Court Road right? I'd imagine because there are so many shops so close together they'd have to be pretty competitive to draw in customers.
As for good advise, I recommend asking this site. Since we stand to make no profit we'd give you genuine advise without trying to sell you one of over-priced goods.

We're all going to be just dirt in the ground.
