Can anyone advise whether there is a software where i can enter the chord (obviously more trickier chords than majors, minors etc) via a TAB, and then the software advises of the chord name? This would be helpful for me when fiddling with shapes up the neck, and also when doing this whilst in altered tuning.
Happy for you to hammer me for my lack of theory knowledge before giving me some useful info as i believe I have read about this kind of software before.

I remember Guitar Pro being able to tell me what chord I haphazardly entered into the staff. Whether or not it was right is another question, but I know that it told me.

Dont rely on a machine to tell you what is going on in your world.
Just know the notes and the scales. Then you can name any chord you'd like.
Although if you dont have theory knowledge I really dont understand why you want to be able to name the chords. If you dont know what the chord is, you just want something to name it for you, what good does that do? You might as well give your chords human names like Bill and Chuck.

For something like that your better off just sticking with the basic quality of the chord and leaving the extensions out of it, or giving them the basic quality and playing it so they can hear the extensions.

Not software but this is a pretty handy chart. I have the paid for version which is worthwhile having and I think you can also download and print out a free version which might be good enough for your needs.

If he can't spell chords, what you just said is over his head. Don't waste your time.

If you are looking for a software program to create chord diagrams, check out www.QwikChord.com.
QwikChord automatically calculates chord names, lets you paste into other apps, saves as JPG, PNG, or bitmaps. It also features a chord definition editor that lets you change the naming of the chords it calculates.
