Good morning all,

First time customer, brand new to reading tabs, and I don't seem to understand what's going on in the following tab (I didn't write it; it's from a search).

Anyhow, I guess I don't understand what a musical "Bar" is, and don't know how to play this, so questions:

  • What is a musical bar?
  • Am I correct in understanding that there's one bar per vertical line?
  • Are there only 4 notes in the 1st bar? (When I listen to this song, the open D is played twice, but the tab indicates only one strike. When listening to the song, I count 7 notes, but I don't see it in the tab. And I have no idea why the 2nd fret of the G is indicated, cause I don't hear that note in the song.)
  • Are all of these notes (in each separate vertical line) somehow supposed to cover the entire intro?

Obviously, I don't know enough about what I learned from the absolute basics, so any help would be appreciated, and I apologize for the novice questions, but I gots to learn this song.

Tab below.

Thanks for your help,

Terry

Eric Clapton: LAYLA (from his Unplugged)

A bar is just a measure, so yes one per vertical line. There are a set number of beats per measure (ie in 4/4 time it means 4 beats per measure and a quarter note is one beat). There are fewer in the first measure of your example because the first few notes are just a lead in (so rather than having 3 beats of silence and a note, it just shows the first few beats).

Tabs aren't perfect translations into musical notation. Not all of notes/chords transfer into the same type of note (half note, quarter note, etc). This is why you have a different number of them in each bar. It's up to you to listen along and decide where to strum.

Lastly, this tab may not be correct and that could be some of the snags you're running into. I can't figure out what the song is, so I can't tell you if its right or not, but when I use tabs I usually make them my starting point. If they sound similar I just keep plucking along until I make it sound like the song itself.

And no worries about novice questions, we all have to start somewhere! smile.gif Hell, just watch one of our old timers come show me what for laugh.gif

Feel free to keep asking questions if you need to!

Can't believe I left this info out ohmy.gif The song is supposed to be from Eric Clapton's Unplugged: Layla

Bars, measures, beats per measure, they're all Greek to me.

okay, what I'm trying to find out is how to read this tab. Is this the lead intro, or are there some chords involved? I've been trying to learn just the intro first, and then move on to the rest.

I'm only now trying to learn to read tab, but all that I've read on the subject so far seems very noviceish, and doesn't go into reading across measures.

How much of this song has been tabbed?

The whole song i guess you didn't read my post unsure.gif and as far as reading across measures reading the next one is the next step. But you really should learn theory because reading tab has to many limitations.

Yes, I read your post, and appreciate the reply. I am trying to learn the theory, that's why I'm posting here.

You said that the tab covers the whole song, but I'm talking about the small part that I posted (not the one you did). Obviously, the one I posted isn't the entire song.

In mine, the notes don't sound like the song, and I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, or not reading it right. For instance, in the 1st bar, there's 4 notes, but the way I hear the song, there's at least 8 notes, right?

I've looked all over the net, including the Wiki posts, and I'm still at a loss.

Maybe what I need can't be accomplished in a forum, and I rather need some sort of video on tab reading.

Thanks for trying tho.

Terry

Im fairly certain you are not reading the tab wrong. Its very easy, there are strings, and there are numbers.

As for the bars in the tab . . . . thats hard to pick up on bars when listening to music, you have to be really sharp. You seem like you still may not have a solid grasp of what makes up a bar . . . so Ill try again.

A bar is defined as a repeating pattern of beats. In 4/4, or common time, there are four beats in a measure (bar). So when they show four notes in one bar, that means that those four notes fall on each of the one beats in the bar (measure).

Do you understand what Im trying to say here before I go and make it more confusing?

The tab you have is the same as mine. You need to download the powertab editor. It is a midi with tab it is worth looking into. I played it and it is accurate.

|----------------||---------------------|

OK, let me try once again.

Taking just this above portion...
In the 1st bar/measure (?) we have an open "A" followed by a 3rd fret note on the A-string, (0 3), then,
an open "D" followed by a 2nd fret "G".

In the 2nd bar (?), there's a NEW twist with the notes being in parenthesis [(2) (0)], but I still take this to mean play the "G" string in 2nd fret, then the D string open (or is it reverse: do we read from bottom to top?), next is,
another open "D" note, followed by
a 3rd fret "A".

NOW, up to this point, do we have single notes being played (no chords or strumming, right)?

After that, it's my understanding that when notes are numbered above one another in the same fret, it's a chord?

I apologize if I seem ungrateful; I'm not. Just having trouble learning tab.

BTW: I understand that not everything is spelled out in a tab, such as tempo, etc.

I hope you can help me here.

Thanks

The notes open A and C are played on the 5th string then a perfect 5th D is played and held until the open D and C then another perfect 5th Bb is played and held for about a 8th note. If you notice the H would be a half note the E would 8th notes 2 8th notes equal quarter note.

CODE
So you would 1 2and3and4 and 1and2and3and4and

that tab is done like this:

the 0 3 part is just open a string (5th) then put your third finger on the third fret of that string and play that -voila your first two notes. then play the 02 part as one strum with the d string open and your middle finger placed on the second fret of the g (3rd) string. dah dah da. that's the opening three notes. do you know how to read tabs? if not there is a guide in this very forum i believe. it should be pinned at the top. this is a pretty simple transcription.
