Hey, I've been wondering about short scale basses... I am in the market for a new bass and since I like to play fast bass lines, it seems a short scale would make it a lot easier on me to jump around the fretboard like I need to. However, there's got to be some sort of sacrifice there, probably in tone or something else, but the problem is I have no means of trying one out myself, and the info out there on the internet isn't helpful like I need it to be, so does anyone here have any experience with short-scale basses?

the topic of short scale basses came up in one of my threads in guitar q&a. the basses that were suggested to me were the Gibson EB-0 (deep tone), Hofner Beatle Bass (still deep but not as deep), and the Steinberger Spirit bass (bright tone). the first two cost over $2k american everywhere i looked, and the Spirit bass is headless.

If you're interested still, I just bought a Gretsch Electromatic Junior Jet and holy balls it is the best 245 bucks I've ever spent, if only for how amazing it sounds when you line it in directly to your computer.

i found one for under 250 at guitar center. is it short scale? and does it sound as good through your amp? because i don't record through a comp, and will be using it in practice and at gigs

I don't know if you're paying attention to this thread still, but I think the only way you can really tell if it's for you is to go and play one. It definitely has a more aggressive sound than normal-scaled bass. But the playability is INSANE.

i ended up going with a MIM Fender J Bass. My hands are getting pretty used to the instrument. I do like the J Bass my sustain is out of this world. But I will definately check out the Gretsch when I go to buy my next bass.
