Hi All!
I am looking for the tablature for Suzanne (originally by Leonard Cohen) but the version sung by Judy Collins that was arranged by Joshua Rifkin but can't seem to find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find this?
Thank so much!

If you provide a download or a link to one I can probably tab it for you. (My old 60s "In My Life" is a vinyl and my turntable isn't working.) There are lots of versions around of Judy doing it anyway so get the one you want, which I assume is the original old LP version. The tune was usually done working out of as if in the key of G, although her guitar was often tuned a half-step below standard which would make it in the true-pitch key of Gb (if I remember correctly).
Anyway, try to get a d/l for part or all of it and I'll try to tab it, or at least one verse (which is usually adequate). I tab a lot of stuff, usually fingerstyle-guitar which takes some time. I'm presently working on a couple of things so it might be a week or more before I can even start, but if you can't find a tab anywhere let me know and get me a d/l.

Hi! I actually didn't know I got a response to my post until just now! I happened to stumble upon it when searching the same question months later.
Anyway, I am thrilled to hear you might be able to tab it for me! Are you still open to doing that? It would be easy for me to send you an mp3 of the song.
Let me know!

I'll give it a shot. (Hopefully it isn't too heavily orchestrated like some of Rifkin's arrangements are!) It might take me a week or two (I'm working on a couple of things now.). But send me a soundfile and I'll see what I can do. Either link it here or send it to duolian@msn.com.

Here's the tab for the tune, and in it there's also an address for a SoundClick sound-byte I did to help with that tab. Sorry for the delay. I hope it helps.
#-----------------------------------PLEASE NOTE-------------------------------# # This file is the author's own work and represents his interpretation of the # # music below. It's intent is for study or scholarship purposes only and is # # not intended for publication, nor for any other commercial use whatsoever. # #-----------------------------------------------------------------------------# . For re-copying: Originally tabbed in Microsoft Notepad using Courier New 10-Font. Tabbed by John M; 3/8/10 . SUZANNE by Leonard Cohen; as performed by Judy Collins; . . The chord positions used are just G-Position, Am-Position, Bm-Position, and C-Position (held as a Cadd9) repeated throughout the entire tune. (Her guitar was actually tuned a half-step/one-fret flat from standard tuning, but I've called the chords as G, Am, etc instead of Gb, Abm.) . The picking patterns within the chords are also fairly repititious with simple note changes made as the basic chord is being held. It is easier to make those note/finger changes in some chord positions if the basic chord is held in a specific way which will free other fingers to make those changes more easily and so I'll put the suggested way of holding that chord when it applies. . Above each tab-line below I'll give the approximate timing of that line within the tune. I'll also give that line's lyrics below as another aid in timing, although it's pretty impractical to try to put exact notes over or between the exact word or syllable. Just a general guide. . I've tried to tab this note-for-note as much as possible. In some places after the lyrics and accompaniement starts sometimes there isn't enough clarity to be positive about a specific note(s) and so it is assumed to be played similarly to the same chord-position elsewhere. Notes that are in parentheses --( )-- are notes that sound but are sympathetic or merely brushed in passing while picking another note. . I would take this tab of specific notes and use it merely as a guide to the style the tune is played in and not worry about playing them exactly as they were on the recording. As long as the notes sound pleasing and fit within the chord-position used it should be fine. You can bet when this tune was recorded, the take both before and after had differences in the choice and sequence of notes played. The take chosen to be on the album just happened to become the version "written in stone." . Keep in mind on the recording the tune was played in the key of Gb, the guitar tuned down a half-step (one fret) and then played "as if" in G. I used standard-tuned Key of G. The tab of course works the same either way. So if you want to play along with her recording, tune your guitar down to match first and then follow the tab. . I also did a SoundClick sound-byte to help with this tab. It can be found at: . http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=426390&songID=8906311 . Anyway..... . . (Intro) . SUZANNE by Leonard Cohen (Collins' Lyrics w/ slight changes) Suzanne takes you down To a place by the river You can hear the boats go by You can spend the night forever . And you know that she's half crazy And that's why you want to be there And she feeds you tea and oranges That come all the way from China . And just when you want to tell her That you have no love to give her She gets you on her wavelength And let's the river answer that you've always been her lover . And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you think you'll maybe trust her For she's touched your perfect body with her mind . And Jesus was a sailor When He walked upon the water And He spent a long time watching From a lonely wooden tower . And when He knew for certain Only drowning men could see Him He said, "All men shall be sailors then Until the sea shall free them" . But He himself was broken Long before the sky would open Forsaken, almost human He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone . And you want to travel with Him And you want to travel blind And you think you'll maybe trust Hm For He's touched your perfect body with His mind . Suzanne takes you down To a place by the river You can hear the boats go by You can spend the night forever . And the sun pours down like honey On our lady of the harbour And she shows you where to look Amid the garbage and the flowers . There are heroes in the seaweed There are children in the morning They are leaning out for love And they will lean that way forever while Suzanne holds the mirror . And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you think maybe you'll trust her For you've touched her perfect body with your mind
