Hi Guys

I have just used all my hard earned cash and bought a (new to me ) guitar today. I got a great deal on a second hand Epiphone ej-200. The guitar is in tip top condition but could obviously do with a new set of strings. As this guitar is a good step up from my old banger I want to do the job right and get set up with the right strings for the job. My problem is there's a bit to much choice. Would anybody have a recommendation as to what would do my job???

My preferred strings on most of my acoustics is D'Addario Phosphor-Bronze Bluegrass Guage (which is a hybrid set with medium bass-strings and lighter treble strings). If this is the guage you prefer I'd try them (although "Blugrass Guage" is sometimes not found in all stores.) (B/t/w I don't use them for playing bluegrass! )

If they aren't available I'd get the D'Addario Phosphor-Bronze in either medium or light guage, depending on your preference.


Some people prefer Elixer strings, which do last a very long time. I think they're good strings, but just not quite up to the tone of the D'Addarios and they cost quite a bit more. For buying pretty good quality strings at a very good price (again, good strings, but not quite D'Addarios i/m/o) you can try webstrings.com .

Thanks very much for the advice guys. Listened to the pros and bought the D'addario's, lol. Had to stick to light gauge as there wasn't alot of choice in that brand. I have just finished fitting the new strings, kicked the wife out to see a movie with my daughter and got my son off playing with friends. Ain't nobody here but me and my new guitar and am playing my wee heart out!! It's amazing how good a nicely tuned guitar with new strings will make a guy feel. It's days like this that make life worth living, lol.

Did you have to adjust the neck after changing gauges? I use heavy dtrings for acoustic but it does slow me down a bit.

If I'm right in saying, you'll only run into problems putting a heavier gauge of srings on due to the increased tension. Going to a lighter gauge isn't a problem.

Changing in either direction will cause the neck to change. Not enough tension and your string will "bottom out" on the frets before you even fret them. If not adjusting works for you then great.
