Let's see how long it takes to get a reply in here, hah. =/
A friend of mine is giving me 1 or 2 excellent speakers, like the big ones. I'm wondering if there's a way to hook them up to the computer to act as monitors. As far as I know, they hook up with speaker wire, so could I cut some wires and put something together to plug into the computer? Or should I just give up dreaming of such things?
I'm bored and wanna experiment.

Speaker wire demands a load, whereas (mini)jack connections are passive connections, if you did some nifty soldering to low-level minijack connections you might blow the speaker.
If your soundcard has XLR balanced outputs, you can solder a nifty conversion directly to the wires, altough there's no return wire. I think this would totally rule out the 'balanced' issue and thus be an equally stupid thing to do.
Best bet is to get some kind of amplifier / receiver which has a line-level input where you can connect your soundcards output to, and hook the speaker wire to this amplifier / receiver.
