Hi, this is my first post here, and I see that everyone here's pretty kind and knowledgeable and stuff, so I figured you'd be able to help. I just got a guitar, my first guitar. I played it at the store before I bought it, played the chords, frets, etc, and I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary... sounded pretty good to me. When I got it home and started playing it thought, I noticed a buzzing on the low E string on the 3rd fret. It happens mostly when I pluck parralel to the top of the guitar, like when playing chords... I think I pluck wrong on individual strings, but I'll fix that later. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knows of any way to possibly fix this before I try to get my parents to take me back to the store so they can maybe help.

well it might be drying/dried out. if you have a case keep it in that, and go get yourself a guitar humdifier (10$ tops) also if you know how you might want to tweak that truss rod of yours, or you may have fallen out of tune. in which case you also need a tuner.

Only at the third?

Have you checked the rest properly?

Have you lowered the action by any chance? I have the same problem on one of my guitars on the D and G strings. I have lowered the action, it's too low now so I get fret buzz myself too.

ok i would say the nut is uneven, or the tuning head is loose, but i doubt that if it is only on the third fret

it could be the frets are worn, what guitar is it, is it a good guitar

If it's a new guitar, and it's in tune and it isn't a little dryer in your home than the shop (a damp sponge in a plastic bag inside your case over-night will take care of that) I would suggest you take it back and let them adjust it. If you were more familiar with guitar maintenance and adjustment I would say you could do it yourself, but this being your first guitar (and it being new and, I assume, still under warrentee) I would suggest you let someone more familiar do it for you. If possible, ask if you can watch it being adjusted so you can learn a bit for the next time, because, if you keep playing there definately will be a "next time". And welcome to the site. smile.gif

Thanks everyone, I played it a bit more, and It's just most noticeable at the third fret, but I did check the others and it seems to happen a bit at the first and second too, but I'm not really going to try to diagnose it. Later tonight I'm going to bring it back to the store and see if they can fix it (I have a 10 day store warrantee and it's been... one). Again, thanks alot.
