Take it from me, if you're brand new to guitar, don't waste your time going straight into learning songs. At least learn basic chords first. At least.

Superwinkie is right. I posted this similar discussion in the guitar Q&A, i FREAKING HATE people who can't play chords. It's a pet peve of mine. DO NOT go straight to learning riffs and solos. Learn Chords! Find a song with basic chords with only like 4 chords thoughout the whole song.

A good song to learn is Wonderful Tonight. Easy basic chords. and later when you get better, you can even do the lead to it.

If you become like those people who only play what they memorize and don't understand what chord or key they're playing at, it's going to be very hard for you in the future.

When you're jamming with buddies, they are going to hate your ass because you can't jam with them, why? because you won't know how to play chords or even know what chords are. When they're trying to tell you, "Dude it's easy, it's G D C D" you're going to be like WTF, i dont understand, and that's basic stuff. Do not go down the road of skipping the road of chords. Learn your basic chords.

Just so you don't get bored with just practicing JUST chords, practice songs that has the chords you are trying to learn. Here's a few songs that has easy basic need to know chords in them.

-Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton
-Hotel California - The Eagles
-Sweet Child of Mine - Look for the one with the Chords, most likely the S. Crow version
-Grow Old With You -Adam Sandler (The Wedding Singer)
-IF- By Bread,(taught me how to finger pick, can be picked or strummed)

Practice getting comfortable with strumming too

i would suggest learning how to read notation before you get hooked onto tab.
but chords come first. please learn them first.

Meh, I disagree. I never learned scales, and it hasn't negatively affected my playing.
But learning to move between chords is a must

I mainly shred so scales were a must for me. If you don't want to learn traditional scales I suggest learning some solos.

I think if you want to go straight to a song, "House of the Rising Sun" is a great one to jump into. And don't bother with the picking or anything, just strum it.
Another good one, and possibly the simplest song out there, is "Free Fallin" by Tom Petty. "Wish you were here" is another good one, although it is really played on a 12string, but it will be in the ballpark.
I agree that you should first learn chords, but these songs just string some of the most used chords together making learning more fun, and isn't that what playing guitar is all about?
Peace
