5 years after NIN's revolutionary debut, Trent Reznor did it again and changed the way people looked at music. THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL is a completely different record from PRETTY HATE MACHINE or the BROKEN EP. PRETTY HATE MACHINE was an electroinic kind of dance/electronic record. BROKEN EP was just an all out assault of sonic terror. THE DOWNARD SPIRAL took both of these records, mixed them up, turned them upside down and backwards, and threw in some new things.

THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL is without a doubt the darkest of the NIN albums. Note that this album was recorded in the house where the Charlie Mansons murders occured. The record starts out with gunshots, then jumps into "Mr. Self Destruct" which is just something that says to you, "here it is, like it or not" The next track "Piggy" is one of the most different tracks on the album. Kind of industrial with a touch of reggage.

After the metal "Heresy" and the punk metal sound of "March Of The Pigs," comes probably one of NIN's most popular songs. The song "Closer" goes into 100 different directions...at once.

After the assault of the record, the closing track "Hurt" which tells the story of a former drug addiction. The song shows Trent Reznor isn't all hate and rage, but is actually full of frailty and hopelessness. The song would eventually fall into the hands of legend Johnny Cash, and would be one of the last songs recorded in his lifetime.

THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL is a record that will stand the test of time. In 50 years, it is still possible to pick up the record and listen to the record straight, without skipping any songs at all, which is rare in music.
We salute you, THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL - NINE INCH NAILS

I'm just now starting to get into NIN. When I first heard them a while ago I thought they were just slow techno. Now that I listen to it again, it's quite groovin stuff. I'm definitely going to purchase this album in the not too distant future.

This album is the soundtrack to my life, is it the best album ever created? Hell if I know... It is most definitely one that I hold dear.
