Me father taught me some basic chords and easy Irish songs I could both play and sing. Irish music is the music I still play. And I write my own stuff too.
On a side note; I was taught on acoustic guitar and still play the acoustic to the present day. Never wanted or needed an electric guitar. wink.gif

Good question ! I've been playing for 40+ years...I guess I wanted to learn because of the fact that I've always loved music...the 50's/60's oldies as well as the folk music and Beatles that followed. Many of my friends were also into it so...we all learned together..from each other....I kinda miss that now that we are all gone our seperate ways..but we still play.

met some new mates up the coast about this time last year.....they had a crappy old acoustic guitar....neither of them was that great at playing it looking back now but i thought they were great being a non-guitarist....for my 18th in february i got a really nice cort acoustic/electric and about a month later i finally picked it up and started teaching myself how 2 play with a few starting lessons from my brother....i taught myself through tabs off here for about 5 months then got a teacher who taught me some basics in theory and my playing just kind of took off from there....ive been hooked ever since i could play my first tunes. the first ever time i picked it up, my brother taught me the 1st part of about a girl..it seemed so hard lol.....i remember ''what it's like - everlast'' and ''can't stop - RHCP'' were the first songs i could shakily play...but yea i always wanted to learn the drums or guitar and i decided on guitar because it was alot more flexible.....you can only play drums where you kit is set up and you cant take them on with you on trips....i also wanted 2 try and write my own songs so i chose guitar.....im only just starting 2 try out songwriting.....after a few years with guitar i might try and have a go at drums but i dont think ill ever convert.....i love guitar to much tongue.gif

I actually started because this guy at my middle school started to play bass, and considered himself above everyone else, but my desire for playing music quickly stretched beyond that. My dad had an old guitar, so I picked it up and started learning some stuff. When my parents saw I was serious about it, they got me my first guitar.

It all started when my aunt bought me "1" by The Beatles, it's all history after that.

EDIT: well, more specifically "Day Tripper" made me want to play guitar.

I'll answer your question, but then I'd appreciate you tellin me just what the hell a peep is. Sounds like what a baby bird says.

Guitar, when I was a pup folks like Elvis, Rick Nelson, Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly.....you get the picture, they all played, or at least I thought they could play, and they were cool.

Even the folks on the Grand Ole Oprey who I listened to and didn't think were cool played guitar.

Ever notice how the girls reacted to those cool guitar players......those boys got more nookie that ya could shake a stick...so to speak....at.

Then all those good bands in the 60's and 70's were guitar driven.....cept Chicago, and I never thought they were worth a crap anyway.

Well I could go on and on, but to make a long story short, I'm a pretty quick study. I decided guitar was just the ticket for me way back when Elvis was shakin his ass and gettin gals like nobody's business.

Funny thing though, it's just not workin like that for me. I think I might be a better player than ole Elvis was. I'm startin to think maybe looks and the ability to sing might have somethin to do with it all. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

The reason I chose to play 2yrs ago was because I too love music. And I thought to myself, "self, why don't you play an instrument?" I tried learning the Piano on my own, never worked out too well. Then I decided to learn acoustic guitar, I told myself, "Self, I just want to learn how to play one song". My mother's friend who plays, gave me one of her classicals to mess around with.

My father taught me the C chord, and the G Chord, and from there, i just searched for songs ONLY or Mostly with C and G Chords. I'd just skip all the other chords and just find the section of the song where It had C or G and sing a long with it. Finally I got tired of skipping chords, so I then was determined to learn the chords I was skipping. After teaching myself chords for a while..about 6months or so, I began playing for church along with my mother's friends husband. That helped me learn some theory. Then I found a friend who played, and he taught me some songs and my guitar playing ability really took off from there.

I wish I could of videotaped my first times playing the guitar, because, it's so hard to imagine yourself trying to play a C chord and trying to play it by putting your fingers on top of the fret bar and asking someone if that was right...haha ohhh..the good ol days.

Well, my mom had an old yamaha acoustic lying around that she never even touched anymore. It kind of was forgotten in my brother's extra closet, so one day I just said to myself 'I want to play some geetar'. I grabbed that guitar out of the closet, and just started playing around with it. I really didn't know what I was doing. It took me a little while to realize that I had to put my fingers behind the frets. I had no idea what any chords were, but I still had enough trouble just playing a simple riff back in those days. I wasn't really serious about playing guitar, I didn't even progress that much those first couple month. Eventually, my friend decided he wanted to get into guitar too, so we got together every now and then and played together. I finally started getting serious about it, and wanted to keep up with my friend. My riffery improved, but I never really got around to learning those chords. Over this last summer(after a year of playing around with that yamaha) a friend gave me his jasmine s-35, and I love that thing. I finally learned some of those chords and taught myself basic theory, and ever since then Ive steadily been improving. I start official lessons tomorrow, after a year and a half of messing around with the guitar.

Well actually i dont really know how i came to play the guitar, when i was in elementary i was better in dancing than in music courses, but when i was in high school, i took off my dancing shoes and started to hold the guitar, starting from basic chords, and learned from whatever guitar books i found.

since then i've always been in a band, playing rhythm but never sticked to one band, never played to ged laid or get paid or get famous, JUST PLAYED FOR THE HELL OF IT!!!.

Now i stick to acoustic guitars its been a long time since i've held an electric, coz i already sold mine.

i never really got that good but theres nothing more relaxing than the sound of the guitar you play.

When I was 5, my older brother got his first guitar, of course I idleized him so I was always messin with it..he helped me and with a good ole Roy Clark Guitar teachin book (Had the color dots you could put on the frets) I was actually able to learn a bit..he moved away about a year later & of course took his guitar with him..my Mom & stepdad would never buy me my own but I never forgot about playing..One day, about 18 years later I was surfin though a local pawn shop, bored ..off work that day..and I saw a nice guitar behind the counter..I asked the man to let me look at it, and although I couldn't remember anything from when I was young, I remember how good it felt..he told me he'd make me a great deal on it, 100 bucks for it & the hardcase..that was 14 years ago, I still have my pawn shop Yamaha...love it dearly, almost as much as the wife & kiddies..lol..

I play for myself mostly, just for the enjoyment of it..never really played in front of anyone actually...I don't practice near as much as anyone should, I go through spurst where I'll play hard for months then just get away from it for a month or two...been playing alot lately though..might actually perform at a local bar on an open mic night, dunno..still haven't worked up the courage..lol..at least considering it makes me play more..

my reason was, i was about 17 and i was really getting intot he old music, lik early sixties beatles and stuff, and i had always loved to sing, and i was thinking how cool it would be if i could play along to the songs i loved singing at the time.
i had an old guitar that had been passed down to me long ago and my uncle had atempted to teach me to go from a G to a C and back again but i had never stuck with it
untill now when i FELT the music
i got a lesson from my uncle and then jsut continued from there

i think the reason i stuck with it the second time was because my reason for wanting to learn was different
and the stuff i learnt was different
it was about the music, not about simply learning a skill

then a year later for my 18th birthday my uncle bought me a washburn and its been my pride and joy ever since.
