Boston's debut, largely recorded in the basement of lead guitarist/studio whiz, Tom Scholz's basement with a homemade 12-track. Boston sold like hotcakes upon its release, in fact it was the fastest selling debut in history, beaten only by Whitney Houston's debut. The result was a gigantic demand for a second album, but Scholz was in no hurry, but finally succumbed to label pressures after two years.
This album is the epitome of studio perfection, I’m quite sure that Phil Spector couldn't equal Scholz's production work (not that he'd be able to now... lol). Scholz was (and still is) a perfectionist. He pairs nice light acoustic verses with pounding electric choruses with overdubs abound. He even goes so far as to make a pick scrape sound like a toy laser gun (very cool), and including at least five guitars on many of his songs.
Everything about Boston screams with talent, from Scholz's pure genius in the studio and as a guitarist, to Delp's insane vocal range (check out More than a Feeling), to the bouncy bass lines of Fran Sheehan. Boston remains a mainstay of kick-ass radio stations around the globe, and rightly so, this album kicks massive arse. Sadly, the band splintered rather quickly, leaving only Delp and Scholz for their third album.
(As a sidenote Scholz was the inventor of the Rockman headphone amp, with his company Scholz Research and Design, the Rockman actually sold quite well and caught on with many guitarists. This guy knows his stuff, after all he is an MIT grad.)
