Do you use them?
I have recently started using a Thumb pick, and don't really like it that much. I can't decide if I am going to keep with it. True, it makes the thumb picked note sound lounder, but it gets in the way when I switch to strumming. I just don't like it.

if i do use a thumb pick it's a metal one, where i need a REALLY strong bass, i also tape the thumb pick on, i pick quite hard and it tends to fall off quite easily. also because it's already in place, there's nothing to get in the way of switching to strumming as all you need to do is place your finger on the other side of the pick. i only really use it for blues shuffles and what not ("life by the drop" for example)

I've just used my bare fingers with a bit of nail showing over the edge looking at the palm of my hand. For a long time I used acrylic on my nails. I'd paint the damn stuff on before every gig. My nails were so strong I could have adjusted the truss rod with my bare finger, but unfortunately, it's bad for the nails. Every time the little armor plates popped off, and they did regularly, they took a few molecules of nail with them. My nails got thinner and thinner until I stopped using it. The good new is that they grew in stronger than before when they finally did. They rarely wear down, let alone break, now. I give them a file each day to keep 'em healthy.

I don't usually use them. Sometimes for acoustic slide where I want more attack for greater sustain and the fingerpicking is generally less complex. They slow me down a lot and make it impossible to back-pick. Just depends on what you like and what you play.
