So I have a piezo pick-up on my Epiphone, and I was wondering what that actually did to the sound of my guitar.

One of my friends has that option on his electronics of his Alverez, and I'm wondering what difference it makes?

Also if you know any other acoustic pick-ups, let me know...not really sure what the differences are in acoustics yet.

I'm assuming that its not as big of difference as a single/humbucker coil on a electric, but I'm sure it has to do something...also how would I check to make sure mine does have a a piezo pick-up?

A piezo is usually under the saddle (a little ribbon or wire between the saddle and the bridge). It's one of the better pick-ups. A combination internal-mic/piezo is probably best. There are also pretty decent snap-ins (or stick-ons). Nothing is as good as a good mic and PA, but there is a "convenience-factor" to onboard-electronics.
Un-plugged is not the same as
never-was-plugged-in-to-begin-with.

Piezo pickups are a form of ceramic crystal that pick up vibrations and convert them into electrical current, known as a piezo transducer. One of the best manufacturers of piezo technology is Shadow

Small microphones are also used in some systems and sometimes mixed with an under-the-saddle piezo pickup.

Rare earth magnetic , across-the-soundhole, pickups are also getting good press, from companys like Fishman and the new Lrbaggs M1.

Taylor have a system out call the Expression System which uses string sensors and boby sensors to pick-up the overall sound of the guitar, details at

But for my money the best system is an under-the-saddle microphone like the Ribbon Transducer System by LR Baggs. I'm hearing good things about the i-beam active system by lrbaggs aswell. More info at:

Another company also uses the idea of an under-the-saddle microphone, a Swiss company called Schertler, being Swiss the engineering is excellent. Their acoustic guitar system is called the Bluestick, more info
