Line 6 Flextone III

How much did you purchase this item for?

$575 (USA) at Guitar Center. Also includes 4 channel footswitch.

Where did you purchase this item?

Guitar Center

Is this item new or used?

New

Features:

Line 6 outdid themselves on this one! It boasts 32 different amp
selections, ranging from the clean channels on Fenders to Mesa
Boogie Triple rectifiers. To sculpt your tone more, it also comes
with 16 cab selections. Knobs include Drive, Bass, Mid, Treble,
Presence, Channel Volume, Master Volume, and Reverb. ALso, 6
different delay types (Tube Echo, Tape Echo, Digital Delay, Analog
Delay, Ping Pong Delay and Sweep Echo) with Tap Tempo. Also
comes with 6 effects (Tremolo, Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, UNi-Vibe
and Rotary) plus compression. It also features an EXTREMELY helpful
noise gate, which allows practically no noise at all even at high
volumes. The noise gate is easily turned on and off by pressing a
button. The amp model i bought was 100 watts. ALso has an effects
loop and a headphone/direct out for recording. The Flextone III XL
or something has a line out to plug into a cab, for only 50 or so
more dollers.

Construction:

Solid and built to last. Features an open back design. This baby
should last forever...

Sound:

The best part of this amp is it's sound. You can literally get ANY
sound you want. With 32 different amp models, plus the 16 different
cab models, getting that perfect tone is a sinch. Metal tones are
fueled by the Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers. Sweet classic rock tones
from JCM 800 and 900. Cool Fuzz Face tones from the same pedal Jimi
Hendrix used. The clean tones come from a Fender amp, and sweet
jazz/blues tones can come from any of the cleaner models, just crank
the gain up a little for a nice crunch. Again, ANY sound is possible
from this amp.

Ease of Use:

You just gotta get used to having 32 different amp models and 16 cabs.
Just read the manual and it's a breeze.

Reliability:

Not a single problem yet.

Overall:

Overall this is such a hot amp. You may hear that "Line 6's sound too
digital" or something of the like. They are probably reffering to
The Spider series. The Flextones sound amazing and are for a great
price. Plus, this thingis loud! at 100 watts, it can easily fill any
auditorium without passing 5. There is no doubt in my mind that this
amp deserves a 10 out of 10.

Ok, not going to do a long review, shoe has already done a top job of doing that. Just want to add couple of things. The amp models really are designed to act like the tube amps they were modelled on: certain models work better with certain guitars (Fender Amp model with Fender Strat, Mesa Boogies with dual humbuckers); the volume pot works the same way it will on the original, for example, increasing distortion on some models with the master volume controlling overall tone; the headphone socket when plugged into the PC line in socket doesn't sound nearly as good as when it is in the amp, this is (presumably) why the Plus model adds a balanced output socket.

One more thing to add, upgrades can be downloaded using a midi interface on your computer (I don't unfortunatly have this) and tones are available on the net. In short: good practical amp that fills my every need.

yeah, i'm pretty happy with my vetta now. i wasnt particularly at first, but it does take a very long time before you learn to get the most out of it.

my only qualms are lack of dynamic response. i plan to fix this with a H&K tubezone (or something) pedal, when i have the cash. this thing is like a clean tube pre amp, so it will basicall add some warmth and dynamics to already great sounding amp. which should be sweet.

and as you said the digital output isnt very good. some guy has made an unofficial patch for the vetta which fixes this, but i havnt tried it yet.

i think these kind of amps are suitable for those who like to experiment with different sounds. also it sounds great at bedroom volumes, which is important for me as i live in a house with 5 other people. however those who know exactly what sound they want, and can play loud whenever they like would be best off getting a tube amp.

I've owned a Flextone III since it first came out a few years ago. I use it all the time for playing small club gigs. That amp combined with the shortboard makes a very cool rig for getting any type of sound you'd need in a small venue with easy set-up and tear-down. Of course, the dynamic response will never be quite the same as a tube amp, but it sounds very close and offers great versatility in terms of amp tones, built in effects, and programmability, plus ease of use and reliability.
