Well... My brithday is coming up and lately I've been checking out Ebay for a Taylor 314ce. I'm not looking for a new one, but one from about 2001 to 2003. The Expression System isn't a big deal to me either. I just would like to know if you all would recomend them... ~N8

I WOULD recommend it, but do you need a cutaway? I would recommend a new 214 otherwise....the 314 looks nicer, but they play very similarly (2004 214 vs early 2000s 314) because they have the same type of wood....

The new 314 are Mohagony instead of Saple, which is what the new 214's and the old 314s are...

They all come with a hard case as well....and if you get a new one you get the lifetime warranty.

Well... I REALLY need an acoustic-electric so that's why I'm going for the cutaway. I looked at a 310ce today figuring it was the close to what I was looking for. Also, I have another question... Did Taylor change the wood they use for the top within the last say year or two? And maybe could you tell me what it was before and what it is now if it has changed? ~N8

Until you get to the 500 series, you get cheap wood for the back and sides, (okangkel ans sapalle). I would suggest a x10ce do that you get a full size guitar, but I would also recomend somthing better than or equivalant to the 500 series.

Buying off Ebay is a great idea, but just make sure you know what your up to and who your buying off. I bought a Gibson acoustic from Ebay with no trouble whatsoever, but you do hear about the nightmare stories too - be carefull and check the feedback!

get the 14 style not the 10!!!! Dreadnoughts are boring!!! you could probably pick up a nice used 414 for just under a grand, say from 1999, the best year for Taylors.

Saple and Ovankol aren't bad woods at all...In fact, many people like the 414 as much as the 814. It is mostly just asthetics....

Why do you NEED a pickup? You can always have one added (without the stupid fishman barndoor on the top) later on, or better yet you can get a nice mic and amplify an acoustic properly....

If you are just going to play through an amp with a pickup, and money is so tight, get a cheep fender or yamaha for $2-300 because it won't sound that different through a pickup anyways....

Acoustic guitars are not meant to be "pickedup" tongue.gif

That's just opinion. Dont try and convince somebody of your own opinion, if he wants a cutaway let him get a cutaway. It's all down to what you want the guitar for anyway. dry.gif

different body sizes have different uses. A smaller orchestra model is very useful for fingerpicking, but a boring full size is going to deliver more tone, especially with a cutaway. I figured since he was looking for a guitar with a pickup, he's probably not doing too much fingerpicking since you get much better tone being mic'ed up as opposed to being plugged in. Taylor's are quality instruments, and I wouldn't try to stear someone away from one, (here it comes), but, the bolt on neck is so tacky up-close and it dosn't sound as good. If you want a suggestion, get a solid piece of wood (or at least one that isn't held together with a piece of metal).

Also, if you're going to get a 41xce you may as well, just step up a notch and get a 51xce (mahogany instead of ovangkol).

my uncle has a 614 ce ltd, it is the nicest guitar i have ever played, its las years model, if i were getting a taylor i'd get a cutaway because the slinky neck makes you want to play higher up.

i'd go for it if i were you- if its going to be too much try and pitch in a bit yourself to get the best you can- you don't want to have to buy another one in 3 years time because you went cheap

My dad has a 712 and that thing delivers more power and tone than a tonne of Dreadboughts out there, for a small guitar it is pretty awesome!! He actually keeps that guitar in DADGAD all the time now because of the tone. He also has a '67 Guild, 2 Bourgois Martin Simpson models, some sweet 'ol Gibson from the 40's, a Sobell 12 String and a Fylde octave Mandolin. quite a collector.

All the same, no way are dreadnoughts boring. And "A tonne of dreadnoughts out there" is pretty subjective. Most starter guitars are dred's, but if you get a decent dred' (Martin, Gibson made) well then there is no comparison. Jumbo's are good for certain things, Dreadnoughts are good for certain things, that's just the way it is...! I own a Gibson jumbo shape guitar. Most of the time I prefer dreadnoughts, but I dont regret buying a jumbo, and I wouldnt sell it for the world. (Well... I'm not THAT sentimental, but...)

i have a 310...not the same body size and not electric... but the quality on this guitar is tops... ok so it's no J-200.

but it does the job and does a DAMN good job of doing it. i actually find the satin finish to be nice and fast for the neck. and it gives the body a more mellow lustre to it. really nice overall. hope it works out for you.

/start random info and thoughts

I've got a 514ce from a few years ago and I love it. it's got great tone and plays real nice. as for the new expression system, i'm pissed that I missed out on it. they don't feedback as much, they sound more true, and they don't have to cut a GIANT hole in the side of your guitar (just 3 little ones lol). as for this battle about to dread or not to dread, it's all preference. simply put, the *12 and *14's are more intimate with a more mellow flowing sound, and the jumbo's and dreads are loud with a boomier sound. I'm not a fan of buying a guitar off of ebay at all. I'd rather play it personally before I purchace it. the difference in sound is huge between every guitar, and I wouldn't sacrifice that choice to save a buck or two.
