ok, this may come across as a bit confusing but that's cos i'm confused.
what's the deal with 'suspended' chords (e.g. Asus4) and 'numbered'(?) chords (e.g. A9 or E7). how do you make them? i know some of them but have know idea why they are called that, how you go from, say, an A to an Asus4 or A9 blah blah, how they are formed etc etc.
any help would be appreciated, cheers

I'm going to give you this, firstly, and because I don't have the time to go full-out about chord construction.
let's just keep it short, on one example.
Take a C chord. That contains the notes C E G. (root, major third, fifth).
Now, should we make that a Emaj7, we'd add the major seventh (look at the link I gave you, and in the lessons forum for more explanations on that).
--> C E G B (root, major third, fifth, major seventh).
The idea is that you substitute (as in the "sus" (suspended, effectively: replace your third of the chord with the "number" (step) after the sus (so, Csus4 would replace the E with an F#)) or add (as in the seventh-example we just saw) certain notes. Someone else will explain this way better than I can do on this limited time, don't worry.
