Ok i just went out and bought a brass slide. I dont even know what to play, but i thought if i bought one i could learn. I need some of you guys that know how to play slide to tell me some techniques. And what i should start out doing. Kinda the basics.
Oh and Dadfad when i went to my musicstore i saw a i believe a 1929 gibson L-3 acoustic. It cost about 2100 dollars US$. It was pretty nice, had a lil wear but not bad, and it came w/ the original case.

Do a search on "Slide Guitar" in this forum or in the Guitar Q&A Forum, and if you want some quality answers just search under the name dadfad.

Josh, there's lots of old posts on it. I have a lot of the links to them saved in a file on my computer which I'll try to post tommorrow (I'm not on mine now. My computer had a heart-attack a couple of days ago [which is why I haven't posted much or been on much for the last few days]. A tech-guy is supposed to be in tomorrow to save all my files and folders after he drags them out of the old hard drive and then install a new system.

And if that L-3 plays well and is in good condition, that's a pretty decent price for it.

Sorry it took so long. I'm having some major retrieval issues with my computer. I think I've lost years worth of tabs and saved-things in general, both musical and otherwise. But I found these anyway (hopefully my American Express account-log will be found next! Or my Reverend Robert Wilkins fingerstyle tab that I have at least six hours of work into.... laugh.gif ) (or I guess more like sad.gif ). Anyway I hope these help. Anything else, just ask.

If you get lost in the forums here's a (really) quick slide lesson: tune to an open tuning and fool around with the slide on the XII, V, and VII frets (the I, IV, V chords). I know it's very basic but it is a good absolute beginner's guide.

Any more suggestions? John has given you links to enough to become a professional slide guitarist, take a look at those links if you really want to get somewhere.

John, sorry to hear about the computer crash. I've lost a fair bit in a computer crash before but they were mostly just photos, nothing huge!

Thanks for the sympathy, Cian. I've lost loads of stuff....mostly convenience-type things....links, saved-pages, pictures, addresses, financials, etc....but also many hours of stuff I'd tabbed but never posted anywhere. Pretty complex stuff, fingerstyle mostly. I have a tech-guy coming in in a couple of hours to see if there's anything he can do, but I don't give it much hope. sad.gif

(And so on this "Good Friday" I'll mix Divine advice-parameters a bit and say "Jesus Saves")

If it's a hard drive muck up (happened to me, a nasty one at that) you can still rescue the drive. It has to be sent off, and it costs a fair bit, but it can be redcued. I know it depends on the problem, but maybe your tech guy will know more about it. Ah well, best of luck. Loosing files is allways a ######.

I guess it's too late for this now, but something you can remember when your PC works again, partition your hard drive, so that if the C fails (assuming you use windows) the data you saved on the D or other partitions is still intact, even after reformatting the C.

Oh, and basically as soon as you finish something important, burn it off to CD's... I myself am absolutely paranoid about this... after having lost a lot of recording sessions a while ago... ouch.

Thanks guys. The company-system tech-guy has been here and all is not (necessarily) lost. He pulled out a bunch of stuff. Of course it doesn't look like anything a computer-illiterate guy like me can use. Sort of like......

<indent>[full ----------2------------3-----------2]///-------------------------<indent2>------4p2---------\\\\------3-------6--------][full------------------------7----9------:///:------9-----6------[tab]------<indent4>----0-----0--line

etc, etc (all kinds of code-y looking stuff).... However, my secretery says she's quite sure her husband (a major tech-trouble-shooter who flies all over the world doing expensive tricks for people) can probably do something, and that she'll make him do it for me (she's very persuasive). She and I are good friends (maybe her husband spends TOO much time flying all over! laugh.gif ) Anyway, hopefully a lot can be done.

thanks for pointing that out to me cian, im an ass smile.gif haha
and dadfad im sorry about your computer too, hard drives always mess up. But i would suggest getting a cd burner and making backups. Its super easy, it only takes like two clicks. ( I was teaching my grandma how to do it last month) So im sure you can do it. LOL
Also im a pretty computer literate guy( just graduated from Devry) so if you ever have any questions that you think i could help you with, please ask. Cuz you help me oh so much.

Thanks. Yes, from now on I pledge I will copy every folder and file and up-date them once a month. (And stop drinking hard-liquor!) (but first things first! laugh.gif )

And thanks for the offer, Josh. I may need to take you up on it sometime! smile.gif

It took me seventeen CD's to backup my music (at the moment it would take well over twenty). Sometimes it's not very practical to use CD's. Now if only I had a dvd burner.

But yeah, backups really need to be done allright, even though they are a pain. (Says he who's last backup was some time last year...).
