Hello everyone, first i wanna say that i'm new to the acoustic forum, but i hope to spend a lot more time here.

Now at the moment i play a Martin Dm
Its a great guitar for value, and the sound and my playing is getting better whenever i play it.

But i know a Guitar like this is not for life, so i have been saving to buy something around the £2k price range next year.

Now at the moment my thoughts are on a Martin d-28, or a martin d-18 or something better.

Now can anyone who had Martin guitars for some time tell me how well they age?

In other words if i got a Martin d-28 would it last me the next 50 years.

I'm lookin to buy one that will be My guitar for life, so i don't mind spending the money, but i want the right one.

Now most of you will say get a Gibson or a Taylor.
Well there great guitars, but the Martin sound is what i want, i know the sound and it fits my playing well.

Also what is the d-18 like, is it as good as the d-28.
I have played the d-28, but i don't know much about the 18

Also is the hv-28 or whatever its called better or not?

Thanks for any help you caqn give me. smile.gif

ok given that.... go try out a whole slew of them at some shops... make sure to drive home the point that you will be buying one as that makes them extra friendly (cheap trick, but who cares... it gets ya some speedy service!). make sure you do tons of homework and know your ######... never ask what they recommend. unless you're talking to the guy who runs the place... those guys tend to know their stuff. tell them specificaly what you want (bassy sound, good sustain etc... )

even try different body sizes, and bring someone along who has a good ear. it always best to hear the guitar when you're in front of it to see how you REALLY sound. hope this helps, and i hope you enjoy your future amazing guitar.

Good Martins last a lifetime and then some. There are thousands of 40-50 year old Martins still cranking away. They only get better with age.

The difference between a D28 and an HD28 is in the top bracing and the binding. Otherwise they are pretty similar. The D18 has mahogany back and sides (if I'm not mistaken) and a rosewood fingerboard. The D28 is rosewood back and sides and an ebony fingerboard. I could break down the differences in these tonewoods if you want.

I have a '74 Martin d-18 that was given to me by my dad. 30 years old and it is still the best sounding acoustic i have ever played. since it is vintage, it has no truss rod so the neck is very chunky, so playability is not exactly the greatest. but i'm 17 and i'm sure this baby will last till im 67 and then some.

go for the best martin you can get for your price range. i personally suggest the d18 because of the rosewood but each has his own preference.

good luck in your search

Which is why you dont go drilling a hole in the side of an expensive piece of wood. Use a bloody mic'...

Martin's are definatley one of the best sounding acoustics out there. One catch... A friend of mine has one, and if you mod it in anyway yourself, and not their 'certified technicians', you void any warranty, lifetime or limited. And all he put on was a pin strap (because they were going to charge like 50 bucks, and he'd have to ship it out of town). Other than that... I want one...and an Ovation *cowers for fear of thrown rocks*
