One way to do it is to tune an open string up to a different note. Say you finger an Emaj chord and write down the notes on the A, D, and G strings. I forget the notes but Emaj is 022100 low to high (fretwise). Then take a tuner and bring the strings up to those notes. Then if you play 000000 it'll sound like an Emaj. That'd be called open Emaj tuning if my memory serves. In Soul To Squeeze by RHCP two guitars are in open Dm7 tuning which is DADFAC. Hope all that helps.

I can't remember why I did it, but one day I tuned my high E down to D... and suddenly all these new songs popped out... I should mix things up again, but I have to admit... I'm so freaking lazy, that I'll stay in standard just so I don't have to turn the pegs to unleash the other ideas

How pathetic can you get? But I just wanna grab and play...

almost everything by ani difranco is in an alternate tuning, i would suggest learning something by her.
I would recomend sorry i am, anticipate or if you want a real challenge, out of range. that one is in ggcgcd.
good luck

I love open tunings, they create some of the sexiest chords imaginable...

though I have NO idea how to create them...

I take a simple approach and appropriate other peoples tunings then make songs from that...

some good bands that use alternate tunings are soundgarden and the tea party.

Some of tea party's tunings are...
(all from low to high)

EBEEBE
DGDGGD
DADF#AD
CCCGCF (sh** hot tuning this)
EBEGBE
DADADE
CGCGCD

Sorry, I don't know the theory behind it though bobchild is on the right track.

Also take great care in how often you tune and detune, you are going to break a lot more strings doing it. One way to prolong the life of your strings will be when you are tuning either UP or DOWN, do it vvvveeeerrrrryyyyyyy slowly and every tone or even half a tone (when tuning up on high E for instance) it's a good idea to do some exaggerated vibrato on your string (which is bending in both directions) this will stretch them slightly so they don't snap.

no one's mentioned DGDGBD (low to high) so i thought i'd throw it in there. This is used for 'last goodbye' by jeff buckley and 'small black flowers that grow in the sky' by manic street preachers.

hi there
this is simple if you have a shubb capo
when you apply it to your guitar-miss out the top string or bottom this will save you breaking strings

put the capo on the second fret-but leave out the bottom string i.e the thickest
this will leave the bottom string in tune with the D string
play all the strings using the chord of D

turn it around for the top string (thinest) and do the same thing

if your looking for picking just use your thumb and first ,second finger bouncing off the open E and D
so much fun enjoy
cheers
