My uncle is getting a new Martin so he decided to give me his. It's a Martin D-16. Now, I know that nearly every Martin is a nice instrument, but how does the D-16 compare to others?

I believe the D16 is sapele back and sides which should give it a brighter tone than the rosewood models (although there are rosewood and mahagony versions of the D16). Of course, it is still a dreadnought so it should sound relatively bassy even with sapele back and sides. It also features hybrid scalloped bracing which is a pseudo-vintage feature. Overall the D16 is considered a mid-priced Martin featuring all solid woods. Consider yourself lucky that someone is just giving it to you.

I have an early 70's D-16. Nice guitar, plays well, very balanced. A little light on the testosterone-level compared to a Gibson, but still a pretty nice guitar. Nice uncle!

I'm pretty sure the D-16 uses mahogany...

There are mahagony versions of the D16 (see my reply above).

Yeah, Martin makes a good guitar. The D-16 is good for lots of heavy picking like in Bluegrass music. I suggest you put heavier type strings to get a full great Martin sound. DR makes a good heavy sting. Peace

My mistake. I didn't know they used sapelle at all, I never looked at martins without cutaways. I guess next time I'll have to reda before I speak. tongue.gif

Well, guys I got it! I got My D-16. Its actually a D-16RGT. It's got Rosewood back and sides and spruce top. Mother of Pearl inlays, herringbone inlays, and whalebone bridge. I love it. It's amazing. Or at least to an inexperienced player like me. wink.gif
