Biography

Jimmy Page was born on the 9th of January 1944 in Heston, Middlesex, England. Page first picked up the guitar at the age of 13 after being inspired by the Elvis Presley tune "Baby Let's Play House " and while he took several lesson he was mostly self taught . Instead of attending college right after high school Page decided to join his first real rock band "Neil Christian And The Crusaders " who had a enough success to allow them to tour England . But Page fell seriously ill (Glandular Fever) and was forced to quit the band and recuperate. Page thought about giving up music and focusing on another interest, Painting as he enrolled at an art college in Sutton, Surrey.

With the arrival of such band as The Rolling Stones in the early 60's and their gritty blues based rock Page's interest in music was once again rekindled but instead of forming a band straight away he decided to hone his craft by becoming one of England's top session guitarists and producers . Although the exact specifics of which session he was with have become hazy over time it's confirmed that he worked with many of the top acts of the day including The Who , Them , Donovan , the Kinks and The Rolling Stones amongst others . By 1966 Page was looking to put his session work on hold and join a full-time band, he accepted an offer to with The Yardbirds (Initially as a bassist then shortly thereafter as a guitarist) as he was paired with another one of the rocks all-time greats Jeff Beck. Although the Yardbirds began as a Straight-ahead blues rock band with the inclusion of page in the line-up the group began experimenting with Psychedelic and hard rock styles.

Despite it being obvious that the Yardbirds were on the downside of their career (Beck left shortly after Page came onboard) Page appeared on the album "Little Games " and several tours before the band finally called it a day in 1968 . With a string of tour dates still set up throughout Europe Page decided to go through with the shows and put together a new band who was dubbed the New Yardbirds including long-time session bassist John Paul Jones plus newcomers Robert Plant on Vocals and John Bonham on drums . After the completion of their initial tour, the band changed their name to Led Zeppelin and explored the still largely uncharted territory of hard rock/heavy metal. The band immediately became one of rocks most successful and enduring bands issuing a string of classic albums from 1969 through to 1975. Albums that featured the unforgettable classics such as " Dazed And Confused " , " Whole Lotta Love " , " Immigrant Song " "Black Dog " , "Stairway To Heaven " and " Kashmir " . The band soon became a must see live act in the process. Page also found the time to work with folk artist Roy Harper (most notably his 1971 release " Stormcock under the alias S. Flavius Mercurius) . Zeppelin was arguable the biggest rock band in the world bu the mid 70's.

Zeppelin continued to release albums until the dawn of the 80's (1976's concert movie/soundtrack The Song Remains the Same and Presence, 1979's In Through the Out Door) but tragedy ultimately derailed the band with the death of Bonham in 1980. After Led Zeppelin decided to call it a day in 1980 Page disappeared from sight (it became known later on that he hardly touched his instrument for a long time afterward). It wasn't until 1982 that Page began to emerge from his self-imposed exile, as he composed and played on the motion picture soundtrack Death Wish II, compiled the Zeppelin outtakes collection, Coda, and took part in the 1983 star-studded A.R.M.S. tour, which saw Page unite with Beck and Eric Clapton for a series of shows that raised money for multiple sclerosis research. In 1984 Page guested alongside Plant , Beck and Nile Rogers on the hit Ep of Rock N Roll Oldies The Honeydrippers and formed his first band since Led Zeppelin dubbed The Firm . The group featured former Free/Bad Company vocalist Paul Rogers and despite the fact that their self titles debut was a sizeable hit the band decided to end it shortly after the release of their next effort Mean Business.

Zeppelin fans were given a rare treat when their surviving three members reunited (with drummers Tony Thompson and Phil Collins) for the mammoth Live Aid at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium in July 1985. Zeppelin reunited again in 1988 for the 25th Anniversary concert for Atlantic Records at New York's Madison Square Gardens with John Bonham's son Jason Bonham filling in for his late father behind the kit . It was the same hear that Page guested on Plant's solo release Now and Zen as well as issuing his first ever solo recording Outrider which followed with a tour which touched upon tracks from all era's of his career. By early 90's further rumours of impending Zeppelin reunion continued to circulate and after Plant declined an invitation from Page to join forces again Page decided to collaborate with former Deep Puple/Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale whose vocal style has often been compared to Plants over the years. The collaboration produced a single album, 1993's Heavily Zep-Like Coverdale/Page they did tour for the album but it was scrapped after just a few select dates in Japan.

In 1994, Plant and Page finally agreed to collaborate once again (although John Paul Jones wasn't invited this time), leading to the release of the mostly acoustic set No Quarter the same year, plus a highly popular MTV Unplugged special and sold-out world tour. A year later, Led Zeppelin was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, this being the second time a Page-related band got the nod from the Hall (in 1992, the Yardbirds were honored). 1998 saw Plant and Page release an album of all-new material, walking into Clarksdale. The duo went their separate ways by the late '90s, as Page joined the Black Crowe's for a tour and live album (2000's Live at the Greek). The same year as the album's release, another Crowes/Page tour was cut short due to a back injury Page suffered.

No That Title Belongs To Hendrix. My Friend Said To Me All Page Was Was Standard Pentatonic Solo's. Hippocritism At Its Peak.

Jimmy Page Rocks And His Stuff Is No Way Underrated. Something That Good Couldn't Ever Be Underrated.

Well they didn't tour in 78, and he got hooked in 76, around the Presence sessions. But yeah he got worse after these years and that's why most people think he's sloppy. They hear some gig from 77, Knebworth, or 80 and are like, wow, Jimmy Page sucks live. But in 69, holy ###### he was on fire.

Yeah, Page is sweet, didn't he write most of their songs? If so, then his songwriting is nearly as good as his guitar playing!
hopkandr
He's not necessarily better than hendrix, you have to remember that hendrix had to make all of the wah pedal sounds by himself, there was no pedal in his day guitar.gif
poopeedairy
Jimmy Page pushed the envelope ever since his enterance into the Yardbirds. although Jimi hendrix was a good guitar player, it was his songwriting that made him famous. yet all of his songs use the same techniques and the same sounds. Jimmy Page goes from the quick staccato of Communication Breakdown, to the majestic beauty of White Summer, to a soft tough of Going to California. watch the Zeppelin DVD for his 25 minute version of White Summer. Battle of Evermore? Rain Song? please, Jimmy Page and the rest of Led Zeppelin showed us all, for a brief while, what a truely great band should aspire to be, gods, great musicians, mystcial devil worshippers, and the common beer swilling drunkard. Long live rock, and take it someplace its never been before.

yes there was, He commisioned an ex-radio operator from the air force to make it for him, along with the octave pedal called, octtavia, that Jimmy page used on the intro for Dazed and Confused

stop blaming heroin, its so easy to blame the drugs, too easy. and to be honest Zeppelin is notorious for being a horrible live show.

That`s a quote from the BIBLE.And I`m far from Satanist as you can get.

Well, you can pretty much play any song backwards and find any message you want in there. Pretty much, you can make any song played backwards want you want it to be. It's no big deal. What's the chance that Led Zep sat down and found all these satanic passages and learned when played backward that they form lyrics that make sense and actually follow each other and can be formed by perfect English?

I stopped believing in backmasking a long time ago.

As for the purpose of this thread:

Jimmy Page was and still is a great guitarists and songwriter. The three most influencial guitarists in my music are Harrison (the most, obviously), Page, and May.
gnr1234
I agree. All backmasking is sh!t, besides the one pink floyd song, but that was made to be a joke.

Jimmy page is one of my guitar heros, I look up to him. He's my favorite guitarist and is my guitar hero, right below him are EVH, hendrix, clapton, gilmor, some slash, and tons of other people.
kurt_hendrix
Back masking can be crap, but Jimmy Page was known to have a toolshed where he preformed satanic rituals. i respect him a lot he is amazing one of my favourites. But its true. not just the song backwards but the fact that he admited it. thats all guitar was back then mostly Drugs and Satanic stuff. as for the song its a whole paragraph and its not like u can barely hear it its pretty damn clear, but i beleive thats the only song with messeges. and for the record they did sit down and put satanic messeges in there song because when u have a chance to get ur voice heard u say whats on ur mind. and because ur not allowed ot say in ur song i worship the devil u say it in ur song backwards. but the thing is satanic or not Jimmy Page is AMAZING guitar.gif
NighthawkSG
Hendrix is definatly the most over rated guiaterst of all time. Don't get me wrong, he's one hell of a guitarest, but he's still overrated. Him, and Van Halen. I personally think that Page is one of the best, and that bit about him being strictly a penatonic soloist, thats the biggest crock of BS I've ever heard. mad.gif

Wrong. dry.gif

They didnt put satanic stuff in it. Robert plant even said ''We only play forwards, not backwards''. I also highly doubt that they sat down to do that, they had better things to do than that. Jimmy Page didnt really worship the devil at all. He bought alister crowlys house and performed black magic there. Well no one knows for sure, but thats whats rumoured. And black magic isnt exactly worship of the devil ethier. Also it wasnt about drugs and satanic stuff back then. Frank zappa didnt do any of that stuff. Jimmy Hendrix didnt worship the devil, ethier did the rolling stones or the beatles. Jimmy wasnt a big drug user ethier, actually not at all i think.
kkatarn327
There's only one instance when back masking was actually true... it was in an ELO song that I can't remember. Forwards, just gibbersih, and backwards it says something like "Why are you playing the song backwards? Go to the beginning of the album!" or something like that. And that was VERY clear. It sounded just like a forwards recording.

Do you know why? Because it was intentional. Yes, it was a little joke ELO played for its fans. This time, they actually did record something forwards, and played it on the tape backwards.
