looking for songs that have this where you kinda stop the dtrings with your hand etc or tap the top to make a beat, any well known songs use this technique so i can learn them?

If you want full on percussion guitar combined with playing cehck out someone like Kaki King or Preston Reed. They both play that sort of style that don't need drums, they keep the beat for themselves while playing. It is pretty amazing.

For a non rythm driven slapping check out acoustic guitarists in the style of Jack Johnson. He uses the slap technique frequently, songs like Taylor, Banana Pancakes, a lot of stuff off his new album.

Or, you can always take songs that don't have slapping and add it in, it makes for much more interesting playing.

I saw a short video of Son House playing a National on Death Letter and the way he picked it was very percussive.

and a lot of other hedges songs have tapping/percusion stuff. and for the ones that don't it can easily be added in.

Kaki King does a bunch of two handed slapping, but I don't think she is very good. She uses an ovation celebrity I think. Then there is preston reed. I think he is a really good two handed slapper. I don't know what guitar he plays. But to tell you the truth, two handed slapping is cool for a while, you know for maybe 3 or 4 songs, but after a while it kinda gets old.

I think Reed is probably the best at the technique. He plays (played anyway) a Washburn that was set up electronically to sustain and resonate the taps, slaps, percussion, etc. You're very right. It is extremely impressive looking, especially to an audience, but gets very old very quickly. I learned a few of his tunes, planning to use them as like set-closers, etc, but the amount of gadgetry, tuning-changes, etc required made it not worth the trouble to me.

Scary acoustic guitarist. Incredible chops. Technical monster. Great compositions. Very deep stuff. Broad range of styles. He slaps and taps, but always in the service of the music - he doesn't seem to make a big show out of it.

And ... he's played with Reed, Hedges, Kottke, etc. I never heard of him until now.

I ordered a couple CDs off his website.

Seems like the best guitarists/musicians don't make careers out of screaming for attention. They make the best music, but often go unnoticed. I wonder how many other unknown monster guitarists are out there ...

More than most "main-stream" guitarists can even imagine. Doing two-hundred dollar gigs fifty-two weeks a year on the road.

if youre lookin for well-known songs, id suggest john mayers why georgia, that has slappin in it, though its not very complex.

but if you want something everyone knows and not too complicated thats the best bet. I never even heard of all the guys these other posters are mentioning.
