maybe its like that one rap guys facial bandage thing.

probally for the same reason he paints his fingernails black.

...maybe it was necessary at one point in time, then he just kept it as a sort of 'signature'

nothin wrong with a gimmick...if there original then there cool...if your doing it coz someone else does then its just lame though...maybe it helps keep his picking tighter or something...who knows.

He has it taped because his hand gets cut from picking really hard if he doesn't do it.

I actually just got back from seeing them in Tampa tonight. It was awesome.

We had a post like this before. Somebody said something about he does it so that he doesn't cut his hand on the bridge, or when he palm mutes. If that's wrong, please don't blame me, it's something somebody else said, lol. tongue.gif

He's a wuss that's afraid his pretty hands would get hurt. biggrin.gif

Aye, he claims he'd rip his palm open on the bridge otherwise. I was heavily into fast palmmuted riffs earlier on, and have never even *slightly* hurt my wrist. Makes one wonder, hm?

Seen 'em twice so far. Not too shabby live, but predictable connection with the audience. I don't need to hear "metallica loves yoooouuu" fifteen times each hour...

As for handcutting: exactly what I said. It's a gimmic more than anything, it's bloody impossible to rip your hand open with proper technique.

You don't have the exact same picking technique as Kirk tho.Plus you skin may be thick at the hand than his.

Yep, I been wondering this too.
I don't think it's cos:

He's a wuss that's afraid his pretty hands would get hurt.

I had a bit of a laugh reading this thread. Lets see, how many of you guys have played hundreds of concerts for around 30 years ?
Maybe the taping of what seems to me as his Knuckles on his picking hand could be to stop his hand getting cut, but if that was the case, it would be thicker and more nearer to the 'heel' of his hand.
To have a single line of tape doubled up over his knuckles personally makes me thinks he needs support, either cos he has Arthritis, or ligament damage from belting the crap out of his strings for 30 years.

Guy's honestly, have any of you been named "Guitarist of the Year" at any stage of your life ? Played day after day for so many years at stadiums ? The wear and tear is natural.
I've seen drummers tape there fingers much more heavily before a concert.
Those wrist bands that just happen to go all the way up to the elbow to the wrist on Guitarists, say like James Hetfield could also be hiding a support bandage; playing heavy Metal, or just playing over many years can cause painful arthritis. Too easy.

No need to lock it, but yes, Hyena, in future check the date of the topic before you reply. The chances are, the guy asking the original question, is no longer with us. Don't worry about it. I realise you're new here, and we like to cut newbies a bit of slack (we were all newbies once!). And wecome to GZ :)

Smashy, stop playing the "moderator". Let the moderators deal with it. Reporting it is sufficient.
