i don't think there are any apart from distortion.

if your talking about the weird thing he oes at the start thats him bending a note in the chord out and releasing it back into pitch

All I know is that the "I am Iron Man" at the beginning is done with a talkbox...

The rest just sounds like normal distortion...

I'm pretty sure Iommi just uses some gain for that song.

At the beginning, he bends behind the nut to get that long bend. I know a lot of tabs say bend at the second fret on the low e, but if you really listen, you can hear that's not right.

Yeah, he bends behing the nut, which is hard if you have a strat style guitar, but easy for most gibsons.

Can't you just use the whammy bar for the Strat style guitar?

Actually he plays the 2nd fret on the D string aswell, but he only bends the open E.

Listen to this man.

You fret the 2nd fret with your pinky (that's most comfortable for me) and use your first and index finger to bend the E string behind the nut so it approximately reaches the pitch of F#), play the octave chord of the open low E string and 2nd fret D string and release the bend on the E.

The whole sound of the song is basically a overdriven tube amp rather than balls-out distortion.

he doesn't use a talkbox for that vocal effect- thats not how a talkbox works he just put on some phaser or flange or chorus or kind of leslie type effect for that.

I feel stupid, but what does bending behind the nut mean?

its not a talkbox...bending behind the night means where the neck ends near the head and th string goes to the winder...you can press down...and it bends it up

You can do it with the whammy, but you have to do it a certain way to get that sound. I want a guitar with the 3 by 3 headstock so I could do that bend there.

You can't use the whammy bar because you're also playing the octave E on the fourth string, and there's no pre-bend on that note.
And yes, behind-the-nut bends are lots of fun to do on my Dot. I just played that Iron Man intro in the way described in this thread, and it was the man.

I've always thought there were two ways Iommi did that intro. Can't remember who told me, but I was told in the recorded version he just did the bend, but live he added the note on the fourth string.

The effect is known as a Ring Modulator, commonly used in studios of the time.
