i noticed this with my bass and my electric guitar that when they are plugged in and iam not touching any metal (tuners, knobs, strings, bridge) that i get a rather annoying buzzing sound on it and then when i do like put my hand on the strings or the bridge, the noise goes away. Does anyone know what this is?

This is called an earth loop and is a common drawback of single coil pickups. It doesn't always happen and can vary depending on the grounding of the power supply to the building that you are in.
Some amps have a "ground lift" switch which may improve things. Sometimes just moving away from your amp or turning your body to face a slightly different direction can make the buzzing disappear.
