You could... But you'll need a DI box to do so in order to balance the sound of the bass. Most venue with a big PA system usually have them handy. Hope that they have monitor handy as well cause if they don't you'll have difficulty hearing yourself.

Use an amp if possible. You won't hear yourself otherwise.

Direct Input boxes for basses work efficiently in smoothing the harshness of bass frequencies. But remember by going directly through your PA you are going to directly step on your vocals and anything else going through the PA. And as a side note, pro musicians don't go directly through the board unless they are absolutely going against the grain. The only people I know of plugging their basses into a PA were the guys who's amps weren't big enough to compete with the rest of the band. Save some money and buy a more powerful amp.

Geddy Lee of Rush has no amps on stage. Instead he got himself dryers!!! Real clothes dryer! He choose to go trough the PA and i assume that he is using a DI box tho it is possible that he might use the output of one of his effects unit or a completely separate preamp.

Don't count on the PA to provide you with any reliable monitoring of what you're playing.
Going straight from your bass into the PA also means giving up all possibility to effectively shape your tone.

Eventually, why wouldn't you want to play through an amp ?
