This is a thread intended to deal with all matters that relate to jazz as applies to the guitar. Share lessons, videos, transcriptions, philosophies, and record recommendations. For example, here are some really good beginner improvisation mp3 lessons:

As well, some harmonic minor studies:

And a video of John Abercrombie, Peter Erskine, Marc Johnson.

That's an oldie but a goodie.

Here's a good lesson on visualizing whole tone stuff, as well as a different way of applying it (rather than over the half diminished/Min7b5 chord, some straight minor tonalities). Fun stuff.

http://www.guitarpeo...z/wholetone.asp

Incidentally, I'm going to see John McLaughlin tomorrow night. I'm happy as a Jap schoolgirl.

It'll be like watching a a speedskater do thighmaster. happy.gif

I wanted to go see McLaughlin this week too. But I can't, I need the money I have right now.

I'm lucky, my dad bought tickets to see the drummer. He was like, "Alex, theres this great drummer coming to town, you've gotta see him!" I'm like "who's he playing with?" and he goes "Some guy named John McLaughlin." laugh.gif

HAHAHAH. My dad actually turned me on to John McLaughlin. He was telling me about how he saw The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Then I really really got into him after seeing his playing on the crossroads dvd.

Oh was he at crossroads? I never knew. Probably shocked a few people, I'm sure.

You know, I was never fond of John's early music, though he's since developed. I must confess, my admiration of him is almost purely technical. Same reasons I got into Allan Holdsworth.

I am trying to get into the jazz guitar thing, I downloaded a few Django Reinhardt tabs but they seem a little complex for a jazz guitar noob like me.

Cool thread Gravitas.

Have you found any good lessons pertaining to soloing ideas over II V I changes? Particularly in applying tension scales over those changes?

http://www.playjazzg...ewforum.php?f=1

all you guys should check out the pinned alt dom thread at the top of this forum (kg- that will give you lots of new ideas)..................oh and smashy, you have to start with a really basic standard (Autumn leaves, common jazz blues like blue monk) and just slowly work through it, listen to lots of people play it, memorize it, transcribe someones solo to it and figure out what they are doing ect.............

The best show I have ever seen

Never heard the term "tension scale" before either. If I had to guess, I'd assume you meant scales that sound tense- so the Altered Scale, Whole Tone, and Half-Whole/Whole Half Diminished scales immediately spring to mind. Here are some Major II V I licks: http://www.jazzguitar.be/251.html and here are some minor versions: http://www.jazzguitar.be/m7b5.html. Good to get a whole battery of II V I's under your belt, I suppose. If you've got any lessons, go ahead and post 'em.

Yeh, I'm a real fan of the Uberjam album, thanks in large part to yourself there Thrash. Picked it up a while ago based on some of your video clips tongue.gif

Oh man, just got back from the McLaughlin/4th Dimension show. Guh, mind blowing! Muscial sports from start to end. I got him to sign my hands, it was awesome.

I figured this would be neccessary to post: Ted Greene's compendium of lessons. Ted Greene, of course, being one of the most well-respected guitar teachers in history, as well as the writer of several instruction books that have been setting the standards for jazz guitar education for decades.

http://www.tedgreene...ing/default.asp

Lessons on jazzing up your single note lines, jazz harmony, turnarounds, progressions, tunes, baroque harmony, walking basslines, and ear training. Just really focus on getting through his handwriting, it's worth it!

there's so few jazz guitarists I actually like. Most of the time I think it just sounds like cocktail jazz.
