I bought an Acer Aspire One from NewEgg http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834115798

It comes with Windows 7 Starter pre-installed. After playing with it for 2 hours, I've decided it sucks balls and I want to put a new OS on it.

I'm deciding between XP Black and Ubuntu for netbook.

Please advise.

Also it has a ATI Radeon HD 4225 with dedicated memory.

XP Pro costs money...Black is free and insanely badass since they hacked the few nasty parts of XP away.

For a netbook I'd say you should go with a Linux OS like Ubuntu and keep it light, clean and doing what it's designed to do.

Actually my triple e PC came with a Linux OS which was faster less prone to viruses and of course it's free. The problem for me was the drivers: it couldn't find the drivers for my Huawei modem so to fix this I switched to XP.

oh man, I never thought about drivers not working properly on linux. I'm not going to do anything with it until I move, but I'm just so goddamn excited I don't know what to do. Like I said, there's an ubuntu just for netbook that I can put on it, but I really wanted to see if I could get TF2 on that little fucker and steam isn't supported for linux yet. *laugh*

To be honest, I read your ' Ubuntu netbook' edition texted, and looked it's info up quickly, forgetting that sometimes getting right drivers for Linux is hard, let alone for laptop / netbooks! If it does support all components in your netbook, I'd suggest it over any win OS, for the reasons dorio provided: the lack of need to run resident programs like virus scanners is already a big plus for such a stripped down computer system. If all you need is mail, a browser and perhaps to type some text on the go (it should come with openOffice) you're set. The only thing I THINK you should actually look for is wether your soundcard is supported - look up the computer's specs on the ubuntu drivers page to see wether a driver for it has been built - then you should be good to go. With 250 Gb's hard drive you could nerd out a bit and get it installed as a secondary OS until you decide which one you want to stick with.

Funny story is a colleague of mine who has a black Acer netbook which had all the right components that allowed him to install OS X on it. Apart from not having any sound and the Apple sticker - that you get with pretty much any purchase from Apple - that still shows the Acer logo that it's been pasted on (on the back of the display) it still is a pretty funny "getto Mac".

I covered up the MSI logo on the cover of my netbook with an Apple logo that came with my iPod Touch.
