Hello, here is a topic on a genius musician and his bands and albums.
Just listen to Extreme - Everything Under The Sun for a quick part of his talent.
I have read in many interviews that he really like Muse and get inspiration with Muse's music.
If you have never heard his music, make sure to listen to "Extreme - III Sides to Every Story" and "Dramagods - Love" albums and tell me what you think about them.

Biography

Nuno Bettencourt (born September 20, 1966) is a Portuguese guitarist and singer-songwriter best known for his role as the lead guitarist of the Boston rock band Extreme whose hits include the acoustic ballads "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted". The songs reached #1 and #4, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1991.
The band broke up in 1996 when Bettencourt expressed his desire to follow a solo career
In 2007, Extreme reformed with the original line up (with the exception of Paul Geary) to begin work on a new album, Saudades de Rock, released on August 12, 2008, and subsequent tour.

Nuno has recorded a solo project called Schizophonic as well as with bands he founded including Mourning Widows, Population 1, DramaGods, The Satellite Party (headed by Jane's Addiction's former frontman and Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell), and then reunited with Extreme to record new music and tour.

Since 1990, Bettencourt has had his own line of custom guitars designed by Washburn Guitars. His line is known as the N-Series, and is currently promoting the Washburn N4.

Nuno is also currently the lead guitarist for the R&B artist Rihanna for her Last Girl on Earth Tour.

I can't really listen to American rock, some kind of medical condition.
However, welcome to the forum

True!

At the dawn of the early-21st century, the only American lead guitar player who doesn't suck is me, and as best as I can determine this mostly is the consequence of preferring to lick, which is fabulous . . .

That guy wanks his guitar more then Steve Vai. I think there is playing fast, then just looking like you want to make noise and try to stroke some ego that you can play a billion notes a second. Never understood the appeal of guys like him, I mean Jason Becker certainly because he was just in a completely different world of guitar playing, but not players like Bettencourt or Malmsteen. The sad thing is, I don't know why a guy who actually can play guitar like Nuno Bettencourt can, would play for a two bit pop star like Rihanna. I guess being a shredder is unfortunately a niche market, though I doubt he is getting paid any more then what he would doing his own thing. Great player, but I can't really get into his music that much.

You can't put Nuno and Malmsteen in the same category. Or clearly you haven't listened his stuff with Dramagods & Mourning Widows. By the way the stuff with Rihanna is very good :

I'm more of a Johnny Mar sort of guy. Mind you I'd play with Rhianna, if you know what I mean.

Bettencourt is old hat, there are far better guitarists about, who are far more interesting to listen to, he was good in his day(and still is) but we have all moved on. I expect that the thread starter has just discovered him, and is learning to appreciate some good music. But there are some other great guitarists out there to listen to both new and old, get yer ears on and start discovering.
