I had begun infiltrating the larger social sites of the internet in my campaign to release my first new musical project in years. Cringing just at the sight of the twitter/facebook/myspace(I guess thats cool again?) logos, I was forced to start thinking creatively. The truth is, I hate social media. I never had a facebook, I never had a myspace, and I was often a passive and quiet lurker on all of my favorite forum sites.
In the early days of guitartabs.cc, I quietly followed the happenings of all of you folks, laughed at your clever insults, learned a hell of a lot from the music veterans, and read the drama of your daily lives unfold on an hourly basis. I was always enamored by the bitter cynicism, coupled with the hearty integrity that each one of you fused your posts with.
If any of that sounds creepy, I apologize, but this was once my favorite site in the world. I grew up quiet and insecure, but thirsty for knowledge. This site, in the strangest way, oozed a sort of culture that I absorbed and loved. I learned a lot, I was exposed to even more. Anyways.... I grew up, moved off the grid, started my life, family and career. I forgot about all of you, and presumed most of you had done the same. Social networking is weird now, there is no allure... no mystery. Everyone is so quick to trade their privacy for thumbs up and digital egostrokes. I thought the days of the (slightly more) anonymous forum posting, at least under some veiling, was over. Then I remembered this site, and I had to see if it still existed. The dumbest smile crawled across my face when I saw that this was still an active forum.
In the world now, everything is online, you no longer build your following by hitting the road and playing shows. Sure, you get your clingy creeps that wanna lick your face, but they typically have nothing of value to invest into the longevity of your project. I am forced to digitize and embrace the tools that now exist on the net. My dream is to share my music with as many people as possible, and who better to share with than the very people who stoked the musical fire in my heart at a young and developmental age!
So here's my pitch.... dun dun dun
