You should get her a classical acoustic for like forty bucks online. A good first guitar cuz you can bang it up and it's relatively easy on the fingers what with the nylon strings, but also good for training muscle memory cuz the frets are bit farther apart.

soz reese i didn't make it clear, she's had that guitar (her sister's first one) and the cheap 3/4 one with a western(?) thin neck, now she's at the stage where the cheaponess is holding her back really (imo)

Ah, right on. I've never transcended that stage so I've got no good advice.

Tanglewood and Takamine have much cheaper alternatives and they sound a million times better than any Fender acoustic I've ever played.

I have a fender acoustic sa-100 old one which was my friends and became mine, I keep the old box which is bigger then me, my family say throw it out but, I keep it incase I ever let it go. Mine has had the action lowered so it plays nice and I like the tone on it, it lets me have something different form my hohners.Plus i Like the fact it says hohner it's a blonde colour. I think I might try it for my dreaded F Barre chord I am struggling on and could use any tips possible to play it. been trying for 3 days on it and determined to nail that chord. That is one of those feelings that David Cassandra has had I bet, my tutor discouraged me so have to do it! this is my feeling with my guitar too!
so back on topic I like fenders, but I did find the neck which is black quite waxy and build up grime builds up easily on it and is s a pain to clean off, yet all in all the guitar stays in tune better then my hohners which I have to re tune every time I use it. I check if it's in tune anyway but, it's worth getting it set up properly what about getting it set higher action? strings are higher so, the guitar is of use and don't have to change it, could always buy one of those, stick on custom skins for it or add some extras to it decals to save some cash.

Just keep playing the barre, even if it sounds not good right away; the strength will come soon enough.

You'll want to make sure you've got good hand posture too, so you're not wasting effort in a bad shape. When you're playing it, try to make sure your thumb is centred more or less between your middle and ring finger knuckles. It might seem like you should put the thumb right behind the first finger for extra squeeze, but it means you'll be stretching your other fingers more and that causes your whole hand to loosen up. And then, like Reese said, just play it a bunch until you get it.
