So let me be clear, I hate cops and think that they're class traitors.

That said, I had a really fun interaction with them earlier today.

While I was in front of my office a sketchy looking dude with a bunch of bags meandered over to a locked bike, pulled out a pair of side cutters, cut the chain, and rolled it around the corner.

So I grabbed all of his stuff, which he'd left on the ground, moved it inside my office's stairwell and locked the door.

He came back (sans bike) and demanded his stuff. I demanded the stolen bike. He gave me some flimsy story about it being his girlfriend's and I explained that it was a interesting story for the police, with whom I was currently on the phone.

At that point he left, as innocent people are wont to do in such situations.

Despite some of my coworkers worrying the legality of my tactics, the police congratulated me for my quick thinking as the dude's ID was in his bag.

That's my fun story of the day.

Fin.

Hah! Classic 'do unto others' moment for that dude, I reckon. Anyway, way to be, sixy. There's doing the right thing, then below that is doing the wrong thing, but the absolute worst one can do is nothing.

As an aside, I wonder if getting caught red handed is a wonderful environment for developing improv because I have noticed a spike in creativity when someone gets busted.

Ouch. Did he die? I've witnessed pedestrian/driver deaths a few times and am totally not a fan.

The thing that put me over the edge of action was that a few years ago a social experiment outside another office of my company saw ten staff members do nothing while a dude "stole" a bike right in front of them. It was on TV.

Nope.  I ran out and helped the guy up, dialled 911 for the guy who hit him whose hands were shaking. It was a low-speed knock, but still flung him a few feet.  He was fine, I found out later, just very bruised.

Oh man, glad to hear that. I watched a dude get doored on a bike a few weeks ago. He looked super disoriented. I couldn't imagine how badly that would hurt.

Super Candian Me.

Go around apologizing and being generally nice.  And occasionally doing dumb things, like Bryan Adams.

I hate when Canadians say sorry all the damned time. They use it in place of excuse me, ie you could be walking in the subway and kick someone and he'll say sorry to you. Frig off, eh? We're not that polite. Just sounds like it.

I will, one day, inherit property in the United States. I will not, however, spend more than 186 days a year there as I would lose my provincial healthcare services. We just budgeted free prescription drugs for those under 25. It's such a sweet deal. You guys should get on that and I'll consider the trade. I love America.

Yeah I just heard he's trying to get rid of the ACA again today. I really enjoy talking to Americans (in the South moreso) about healthcare. Usually the Northerners are like, "yeah we're getting screwed". But a lot of people I speak to in the South seem to think we wait in big lines or that the government has some kind of a kill list or something. Another one I hear a lot is, "but you guys cross the border to get healthcare here in America". Where do people get these ideas? (Trump)

It's a way of dealing with it though - when you actually face up to the reality of the healthcare system it is terrifying and uncertain for a huge number of people.

One thing that does frustrate me about our social health care in the UK is the lack of choice and a low quality of care. Especially with regard to mental health. Coupled with the welfare system it's absolutely toxic. I envied the US system in the past. Doctors not constrained by outdated medical guidelines. No financial gatekeeping of services. I guess when you have the resources it's pretty good to have choice and freedom. Idk.

This is what turned me against socialism in my late teens. More and more I'm realising liberalism (ownership of property) is trash too and a lot of the problems of the UK are caused by neo-liberal attitudes, neo-liberal politics and bigotry.
