Hello and welcome to legends number 23 smile.gif This week it is the guitarist of Pink Floyd yes thats right Mr Dave Gilmour So no more waiting for those fans here it is smile.gif

Biography

David Jon Gilmour was born on 6th March, 1946. He was the lead guitarist in with the pshychadelic Rock outfit Pink Floyd and has a distinctive style featuring Echoes , deleays and Distorted sustain . He joined the band in 1968 after he had established himself as a guitarist and vocalist in the group " The Joker Wild " . Roger Waters had hired him in order to support Syd Barrett Roger's idea was that Syd would continie writing the songs but Dave would play them live but it was not to be and soon Syd left leaving Dave who of course took over the role of guitarist and also took over seom singign and writing .

Right up to the phenomonal " Dark Side Of The Moon " album Dave was also writing his own songs but from there to " The Final Cut " Roger Waters took over in the lyrics department . Dave made up for this by producing some excellent Guitar and production work on all the those albums most noticably " SHine On You Crazy Diamond " ( From " Wish You Were Here " ) and " Comfortably Numb " ( from " The Wall " ) . He also did a large amount of the vocals in Pink Floyd and many say that he has the best singing voice in the band .

But Dave has not only received success from The Floyd oh no his solo efforts have done well with his self titled debut reaching number 29 and the follow up solo album " About Face " hitting number 32 in the charts .

But Pink Floyd didn't seem as steady as it had once seemed and Roger Waters decuded to leave the band , Nick Mason and Dave tried continued and released a record under the Pink Floyd name . But waters thought the name was best layed to rest and sued them over the usage of the name " Pink Floyd " .The two parties eventually reached a settlement thought before the matter ever reached court .

Meanwhile , Pink Floyd did not die . Their first post-waters release , " A Momentary Lapse Of Reason " went on to become a major sucess . And in 1995 several years off the group released " The Division Bell " followed by a live recording from this tour their most recent release " Pulse " .

Althougth Pink Floyd are no longer a band their music still comes through in many of the bands nowadays who have been influenced by the band's sound style etc their music will never die and it seems that the fans love for the band won't either so we thank the Floyd for their inspiration smile.gif

Gilmor should never be read about, only listened to. Nevertheless, good choice, its always good to see a new Legends posted. It's like coffee after dinner, the staple constant of GTU.

Gilmour was the player that made me pick up the guitar for the first time. He has incredible tone and knows when not to play anything. Its sad that i'll never get to see the floyd play live..... i was born in the wrong decade!

David Gilmour is one of my favs. He had amazing tone, his vibrato was incredible and he played with so much emotion. And the guy could tear it up when he wanted to. Maybe not at a Satriani or Yngwie pace, but he was still good.

Dave is still around; and we're still expecting great things from him. About the
Pink Floyd's come back with roger Waters, i think that's impossible. sad.gif

David Gilmour is super cool !!
He's one of my favourite guitarists and his sound is just something else.
No comparison, simply unique !!
Shine On You Crazy Diamond is beautiful... and one of my favourite Floyd songs.
If anyone has the DSOTM DVD, there are lovely parts on it, where Dave plays bits of songs... it's wonderful.

Shine On David Gilmour !!! smile.gif

(and hopefully they'll tour someday... )

Gilmour is a an awesome guitarist, though I didn't find his solo stuff quite as impressive. I'm more into Roger Waters...The Waters era was Floyd's best, and 'Amused to Death', 'Radio KAOS', and "The Pro's and Con's of Hitchhiking' are all amazing albums.

That's true that guitarists as Joe Satriani or Steve Vai play faster than him, but I think a guitarist is more than that. Dave is the best guitar player of all time!!!
My favorites: Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Time, Comfortably Numb (from PULSE, impressive), High Hopes, Lost For Words (one of the best acoustic I ever heard...), etc...

What about his self titled solo album. That is gold!!!!!!!! It was recorded between Animals and The wall, so he was a busy boy at the end of the 70's. He also played with Paul Mcartney recently.

Absolutley my favorite player hands down. Great tone. The best phrasing I've ever heard. Never a note too many, and always exactly the right ones. As tommeh said.. tasty!
