There are a good number of advanced (along with intermediate and a few beginner) fingerstyle/fingerpicking tunes/arrangements available for free in TablEdit format over at my site at:

http://www.stevemcwi.../guitar/tab.htm

Also provided is a download of a free Tabledit file viewer (TefView) which will display the tunes on your computer screen, play them back over your computer speakers (and allow you to alter teh tempo) and will also print the arrangements for you.

Enjoy.

Keep on pluckin' and have a great 2007.

One that I am suprised no one mentioned is Tommy Emmanuel's version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, I have a powertab of it and its pretty freaking tough, then again he does a lot of crazy noodling and his melodies are odd to work out.

Not to hard to play but, Dear Prudence(Beatles) is a fun song to pick. Just needs a Drop D. There is an Under The Bridge(Unplugged) on powertabs, thats not to challenging, and it sounds good. Brain Damage(Pink Floyd) great song to pick. I didn`t see a mention of Nothing Else Matters(Metallica) or Tears in Heaven(Eric Clapton). Being a big fan of Eva Cassidy, and John Renbourn, then i have to say anything by either of those 2 would be fun, and in some cases somewhat challenging.

Glad to see someone mention Steve Howe!

Mood for a Day is easy. "Clap", not "the clap" is more difficult. You want to get back on topic??? Try to play "Southern Rag" by Blind Blake! Anyone here willing???

Bill

I play several of Blake's tunes already. "West Coast Blues" (which is basically identical to "Southern Rag" but with no vocal); "Diddie Wah Diddie;" "Police Dog Blues;" "That'll Never Happen No More;" "Brownskin Mama;" "Too Tight Blues;" and "Blind Blake's Breakdown." I also do a few other of his tunes but more like other artists who later covered them, like "He's In The Jailhouse Now", but more in the style of Merle Travis and "Goin' Down That Road Feelin' Bad" but usually more like Bowling Green John Cephas version (It depends on my mood!). I've been working on "Chump Man Blues" off and on a little bit lately (not as tough as some of his stuff) (in dropped-D). You're right, working with Blake's stuff is pretty challenging and if you stay with it will get your overall fingerpicking skills honed very quickly.

And welcome to GTU.

Thanks for the welcome Dadfad!

I recorded a little fingerstyle sampler and uploaded it a few minutes ago.

http://www.soundclic...;songID=5427565

I found tab useless in learning to pick. If you can play that sampler above, you will find there is no song you can't pick. Basic C chord. I start new pickers off with a slow simple forward roll and pinch, then gradually pick up speed. That simple. The left hand stuff is much easier and falls into place. Left hand tab can be useful then. In this little piece I'm just useing a Jim Dunlop Jazz pick and the remaining 3 fingers including the pinky. But I also use a Zookies L-30. The bass line stands out better, but of course is a hinderance when playing scales. when I play banjo I use ProPik F-Tone fingerpicks. They expose the flesh of the finger-tips and feel very natural

The terms finger picking or fingerstyle Guitar refer to using the fingers of your right hand to pluck the strings individually, rather than using a pick or fingers to strum the strings. The technique is very similar and can be identical to the way a classical guitarist plays.

The number of fingers players use varies. Some of the early blues guitarists like Reverend Gary Davis used just the thumb and index finger, resting the other 3 fingers on the pick guard.

Sorry for knocking up a rather old thread but its stickied so hopefully its cool smile.gif

Anyway I've recently got really into Nick Drake. Whilst his work may not be as complicated as other artists mentioned in the thread (More begginner/intermediate than advanced) its still simple, beautiful music. I managed to pick up his album "Pink Moon" for £4 in a local HMV and every song is finger-pickin' good smile.gif Heres a few songs on YouTube.

Nick Drake - Road

Nick Drake - Which Will

The thing about his songs though (Be warned) he uses some bizarre tunings smile.gif Dont think you'll ever be in EADGBe again!

I went through a brief "Nick Drake Period" back in the early 70s (after a trip to England where I picked up a cassette of his music) ("Pink Moon"). I liked a lot of his stuff (still do) and spent a fair bit of time trying to figure out some of his tunings. My experience with country-blues tunings helped quite a bit. Most were sort of related to more common tunings (like to DADF#AD for example) with a bit of tweaking here and there. I still have a notebook buried somewhere from messing with his tunes. I really like both "Road" and "Which Will." He did some nice stuff.

I think you've got a pretty good list going there Vince. Just wanted to add that I think it's great that you are going for the more difficult songs. Pushing yourself is what stretches you and ever moves the boundaries out farther. I'd say once you've got some of those together you're doing pretty well.

You mentioned Chet Atkins. I can remember . . . .uh, warning . . .this will sound like an "old man" story . . I can remember playing pieces of his songs over and over again on a vinyl album until I got the notes right. "Lovely Weather" was one of those. Kind of a corny name but a good song. His material with Les Paul is an inspiration to any guitarist. What was cool for me was finding out some players learned a song or two off my own CD. It may seem far off, but maybe you'll have that experience one day too.

Keep stretch'in it. Tim Hillwood AcousticGuitarCD.com
