#3527577 Back Up GTU

Posted by sixgunsound on 09 April 2018 - 09:39 AM

Heads up to all Ombud level admins - since the attacks seem to be over, I've been deleting status updates from the "see all status updates" page. If you hover your cursor over the "delete" link and click, hit enter, click, hit enter, ad naseum, the list decreases steadily. I've gone from 980 something pages to under 960 in a short while. If we all nail some, it should be done and back to normal shortly.

Hey Everyone!

It's the first new thread of 2018! And it's only March! The end of March!

Ok, so nobody posts here regularly anymore.

That's okay, we keep it clean from spambots like a shrine.

However, if you're here and wondering where we all are - check us out on Facebook. You will need to have a contact, because the group is secret!

If you need one, ask here!

Oh and say hi! We can always post on the boards thanks to your committed ombudsmen team!

#3519369 Hey, Hi, How's it all been?

Posted by sixgunsound on 13 December 2017 - 11:39 AM

Yo GTU is more active than ever. We did migrate to a secret group on facebook, though! Not that we don't use this, but it is really cool to see the community back again. Add us all to FB and we will hook you up.

Good to hear you are getting better!

#3513944 I Took A Vacation!

Posted by sixgunsound on 28 August 2017 - 05:45 AM

I decided to drive to the east coast with my girlfriend and my parrot. We did the following:

Took all secondary highways.

Drove the Cabot Trail

Visited Prince Edward Island

Saw the Bay of Fundy and the world's highest tides

Checked out Fredericton, Halifax, and Quebec City

Spoke a lot of French and ate a lot of cheese

Ate three donairs

Hung out with my parrot

I like fixing. If we could get Rob to confirm whether or not he cares to keep this place running. Realistically he's probably paying money he'd rather not. It's a convo that should be had.

Nice! My dad ran a home brew wine shop for years. I worked there a ton; typically we'd have about 500 gallons of wine on the go at any given moment. You will become an alcoholic and that's great news!

#3510989 Dashcam

Posted by sixgunsound on 21 July 2017 - 05:48 AM

So in May I was in two car accidents.

First one a dude in a BMW texting and driving blew a stop light and T-boned my '03 Malibu. If my girlfriend hadn't swerved at the last second the impact would have been directly into her door. Luckily the corner of his car caught the post in the frame square: my car bent in half and the window exploded in our faces, but we were not badly injured.

Ten days later a woman behind me was texting. I watched her the entire way into the back of my '79 El Camino. She had maybe $5500 in damage. She crushed her bumper, her hood, knocked out the alignment of her front end, and I have no idea how her airbags didn't deploy. I had no damage (fibreglass and plastic meet chrome and steel), so I angrily advised she stop texting and driving and pay attention. I did a pretty sweet burn out as I left her mostly crippled in the middle of the road.

So I bought a dashcam. It's super sweet. It records from two lens, one of which swivels any direction I like. My new plan is to record drivers texting, post the videos to twitter, and tag the police. I'm not sure what it will accomplish, but I need an outlet for my barely containable rage whenever someone is texting and driving near me. I've nearly gotten into some road-ragey fights with people a bit bigger than me.

Do you have a dashcam? Get one! Later I'll post some sweet videos.

As irritating as ?

#3510124 What are you reading?

Posted by sixgunsound on 23 June 2017 - 06:54 AM

I haven't really read heavily since the end of my degree. Something about the stacks of requisite books in a history programme, I suspect.

That said, I do have tons of recommendations if you're into dark Russian tomes. Check out Andrei Bely's Petersburg for patricide, time bombs, and a brilliant depiction of the city as almost a character in the book.

If you're into something a bit shorter, check out Chekhov's short stories. He's the master of the genre in the opinion of many.

#3509549 Hey guys ...

Posted by sixgunsound on 15 May 2017 - 06:14 AM

Don't forget the first thing I said was "shitty".

It's shitty. It's Cartman's poop swatch shitty. Nothing about it is good. Nothing. And if you're stuggling too, this isn't going to help at all.

It's not about rising above it, it's about meeting it head on. And it's going to be shitty. If you aren't feeling shitty you aren't getting better. And you might not get better quickly, or at all. You might live with it forever. But I promise you that living with it forever saves you passing the buck to someone else like your boy just did. That's not to put anything else on his shoulders - he was clearly troubled. But now you have to piece it together as best you can.

I also said there are no words, and that's still true. These are just words. You gotta live this. Please keep living it. You might just be a bunch of letters on my screen, but we've done the whole suicide thing on this forum and I can assure you that you are more than just ones and zeros to people here and in your real life.

#3509545 Hey guys ...

Posted by sixgunsound on 15 May 2017 - 05:44 AM

Dude - shitty.

There aren't words, are there? My town had a number of suicides when I was a kid. You don't need to hear any of the details, I'm sure, but suffice it to say, I hear where you're at mentally.

1. Reach out. There are mental health services all over the place. I'm not sure how it works for you as an American given your healthcare system, but I hope you at least have a resource covered somewhere. If not, reach out to friends or family. Or us. I mean it. The worst thing you can do is to isolate your thoughts and allow further validity to what you must know, deep down, are not healthy thoughts. You need someone to tell you that. FB message me anytime - I fucking mean it.

2. Celebrate. Your friend had something fucked up happen in his head. That doesn't take away from everything he did, was, or could have been. He was a person and you, taking over his work, have a cool opportunity to celebrate who he was.

3. Don't feel obligated. See the above point? You aren't the flag bearer of his memory. This isn't the remaining Beatles remixing Lennon's Free as a Bird in the early 90's. You aren't required to be anything. The only thing you need to worry about is you. If celebrating his memory is hard for you right now, let others take that on.

4. Volunteer. You might find it really really difficult, but never forget that somewhere there's a kid being bullied who's ready to take a long trip over a railing. We have Kid's Help Phone here: kids can call in about anything just for someone to hear them speak. Catharsis is important, but know that your journey through this can be to the benefit of others. Again, don't feel obligated. Your catharsis is just as important. Know, however, that just because you weren't the light your buddy needed when he was at the edge, that you can still be a light for someone.

5. PTSD is real. It is real and it can affect you. Do not think you are immune. Get help if you need help. If this thread has done nothing to help you, do not stop looking for something to help you. Never stop looking. Never stop. Never.

Yeah mental health is funded poorly here too. Lucky for me we have the country's biggest mental health hospital within sight of my current location. But for others? Yeah talk about indigenous kids committing suicide by the tens at a time in tiny little villages. It's disheartening. I'd like to see the proposed military spending funneled back into the provinces for healthcare.

So let me be clear, I hate cops and think that they're class traitors.

That said, I had a really fun interaction with them earlier today.

While I was in front of my office a sketchy looking dude with a bunch of bags meandered over to a locked bike, pulled out a pair of side cutters, cut the chain, and rolled it around the corner.

So I grabbed all of his stuff, which he'd left on the ground, moved it inside my office's stairwell and locked the door.

He came back (sans bike) and demanded his stuff. I demanded the stolen bike. He gave me some flimsy story about it being his girlfriend's and I explained that it was a interesting story for the police, with whom I was currently on the phone.

At that point he left, as innocent people are wont to do in such situations.

Despite some of my coworkers worrying the legality of my tactics, the police congratulated me for my quick thinking as the dude's ID was in his bag.

That's my fun story of the day.
